What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Software Engineer - SLAM position at Zooz?
Our Calibration, Localization, and Mapping (CLAMS) team is responsible for building the algorithms and tools necessary for keeping Zoox vehicles well calibrated, always knowing where they're located within the world, and aware of their environment. Without precise calibration, localization, and mapping our vehicles would be at a disadvantage when it comes to perceiving and reasoning about the surrounding world, and is therefore foundational in enabling results from many other teams across Zoox.
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Principal Software Engineer with a robust mathematical background to lead and influence our CLAMS algorithms. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and practical application, ensuring that our teams across different departments, including SDMA, Planner and Controls, are aligned through clear, concise, and rigorous mathematical descriptions of our algorithms.
In this role, you will :
- Develop robust localization algorithms that perform effectively in dynamic environments with imperfect information.
- Craft mathematical models and documentation for calibrating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of our comprehensive sensor suite.
- Innovate and refine map feature generation processes for our Zoox Road Network (ZRN), leveraging both classical methods and cutting-edge techniques.
- Drive the analysis and propagation of uncertainties across different layers of the Zoox technology stack.
- Serve as a mathematical expert within the company, simplifying complex concepts to foster understanding and alignment across various technical teams.
- Mentor and coach a team of engineers, guiding them to success and leadership in their respective areas.

Compensation
There are three major components to compensation for this position : salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. The salary will range from $254,000 to $451,000. A sign-on bonus may be part of a compensation package. Compensation will vary based on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
