What are the responsibilities and job description for the Solar Planning Engineer position at ZSG?
Our client is the Midwestern / Great Plains region’s foremost commercial and community solar EPC. They currently have a full backlog through Q1 of 2027 and are continuing to grow.
The Solar Planning Engineer will have extensive knowledge of PV Solar installation, electrical codes with an emphasis on safety and OSHA regulations. They will have responsibility over the tasks and deliverables in the project development preconstruction phases of each project to ensure the critical path activities have been met and the project is ready to hand over to the construction team.
Compensation: $100k-$130k base salary strong bonus potential
Essential Job Functions:
- Manage Engineering & Design: Oversee all engineering and design efforts throughout project phases, ensuring compliance and timely delivery.
- Technical Drawing Review: Create and review drawings to maintain project timelines and accuracy.
- Support Construction: Provide technical assistance during construction to ensure designs are implemented effectively.
- Decision Making: Evaluate trade-offs related to cost, schedule, and performance to meet project objectives.
- Development & Permitting Support: Collaborate with Business Development and regulatory bodies, conducting necessary technical analyses to advance projects.
- Resolve Technical Issues: Lead RFI resolutions, review submittals, and support weekly construction calls.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Align engineering activities between internal and external teams, reducing ambiguity and risks.
- Risk Management: Maintain the project risk register and communicate risks to stakeholders.
- Software Utilization: Use Helioscope and PVSYST for energy modeling and system design support.
- Equipment & Design Review: Approve equipment drawings, ensure constructability, and review designs for code compliance.
- Process Improvement & Innovation: Lead process improvements and integrate new technologies.
- Vendor & Consultant Management: Build and manage relationships with vendors and consultants.
- Team Training: Provide technical training and support to Construction teams.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering with an applicable discipline preferred, but not required.
- Working knowledge with National Electric Code
- Extensive experience in solar project engineering or a similar field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical concepts and topics effectively for non-technical audiences in written reports and documents and verbal presentations
- Experience managing multiple projects at one time, with a demonstrated ability to switch between contexts quickly and efficiently
- Skilled at making sound and defensible decisions with incomplete information
- Knowledge of solar energy systems and industry trends
- Ability to build and maintain long-term, trusting relationships
- Detail oriented and capable of managing multiple tasks and priorities
- Software/tools expertise with the following, or comparable: AutoCad, PVSyst, Excel, Smartsheets, ProCore, SiteTracker, etc.
Certifications/Credentials:
- NABCEP certification a plus
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Salary : $100,000 - $130,000
