The Institute of Biomedical Engineering is offering a
PhD Position: Data-driven Modelling of Brain Wave Dynamics during Sleep (m/f/d)

The Institute of Biomedical Engineering conducts research at the forefront of medical wearables to advance remote monitoring and improve patient outcomes. We are seeking talented researchers to develop new algorithms for modeling the electroencephalogram (EEG) during sleep, enhancing the understanding of its dynamics. Doctoral research topics may include generative AI, recurrent neural networks, circadian and ultradian modelling, biomedical signal processing, pattern recognition, and the integration of algorithms into embedded systems for accurate sleep quality assessment.
Your profile:
- Hold or be near completion of a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Neuroscience, or a related field.
- Excellent background in machine learning and generative AI. Experience with the application of transformers in the context of biomedical signal processing would be advantageous.
- Demonstrate a strong interest in topics related to sleep and brain physiology and the application of technology to improve health outcomes.
- Have a strong interest and aptitude for algorithm development and time-series data analysis.
- Familiarity with relevant programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB) and data handling techniques is highly desirable.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and the ability to contribute to cutting-edge research.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Be team-oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team and clinical partners.
Your responsibilities:
- Conducting cutting-edge research into the modelling of EEG and sleep patterns.
- Designing and implementing algorithms for generating artificial EEG waveforms from wearable data.
- Analysing large datasets of physiological data to identify patterns and digital biomarkers relevant to sleep quality.
- Collaborating with healthcare professionals and neuroscientists to ensure the clinical relevance and usability of developed solutions.
- Contributing to the dissemination of research findings through publications and presentations.
- Staying up to date with the latest advancements in wearable technology, generative AI, and sleep research.
