POSITION: SCHOOL COUNSELOR/SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER –

SCHOOL MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT SPECIALIST  (GRANT FUNDED)-10 Months

QUALIFICATIONS: 

The individual must be licensed by NC DPI in either School Social Work or School Counseling. If the individual does not hold an NC license through DPI, they must qualify for a provisional license. For social work, the individual must have either a completed Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a Master’s degree in Social Work. For counseling, the individual must have either 24 credit hours completed towards a Master’s degree in School Counseling or a relevant Master’s degree as determined by state board policy. Must possess strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written skills. Considerable working knowledge of computers, Microsoft Office and Google Suite. Must possess knowledge of various community resources, mental health, and primary care providers, and how to link and refer applicants to these services. Applicants should also be familiar with the System of Care philosophy, Child and Family Teams, small group counseling, and facilitating training for large and small groups.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Student Services

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implements the SPARCS trauma-informed small group counseling program in designated secondary schools.
  • Utilizes knowledge of the System of Care and Child and Family Teams to facilitate School Care Review Team meetings within the assigned attendance areas.
  • Collaborates with school personnel and families to develop personalized plans to address students’ mental health needs as identified through the School Care Review process.
  • Gathers and reviews pertinent student records to assist with the School Care Review process and student transitions to and from school.
  • Assists with the coordination, linkage, and referral of students to mental health and health care services.
  • Follows-up on student progress at 15, 30, and 60-day intervals for up to one school year.
  • Consults with school staff, parents, and Care Review Team members as requested.
  • Assists in carrying out specific training, educational programs, and outreach designed to train staff and parents to identify the early warning signs of mental health issues, to address health needs, and how to access internal and external resources.
  • Supports the transition of students to and from intensive interventions (i.e. YDC, day treatment, PRTF, psychiatric hospital stays, etc) back to their home schools.
  • Assists with the monitoring, implementation, and identification of students to participate in the School Behavioral Health program.
  • Completes all assigned paperwork in an orderly and timely manner.
  • Follows the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s Professional Standards for school counselors, school social workers, and school nurses.
  • Maintains data on program activities and student outcomes.
  • Serves as a team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer-driven, and valuing diversity.
  • Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.
