POSITION TITLE: Special Education Support Professional (Transition Program)

POSITION STATUS: Full Time Non-Exempt

PAY STRUCTURE: Salary Range (Min $17.00-$18.50 hour)

REPORT TO: Director of Special Education 

360-SPECIAL EDUCATION TRANSITION SERVICES:

The program offers transitional services for adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are transitioning from school to adulthood, typically between the ages of 17 and 21. Area school districts may contract with 360 to provide instruction under the existing Individual Education Plan. Our transition program provides a calm, quiet, highly structured environment with 1:1 staffing as we work toward increased self-regulation and greater success. Students in this transition program follow an outlined instructional guideline in their Individual Education Plan. Our goal at 360 is to ensure that each student is confident in handling daily responsibilities. We provide specialized support to help each person and their circle of support understand their options and build the skills they need to become increasingly independent.

POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Under the purview of a Certified Special Education Teacher and Director of Special Education, an Education Support Professional (ESP) assigned to the transition program will work with students with disabilities by implementing academic driven curriculum in the areas of independent living, social skills, and vocational experience. ESPs assume the professional responsibility of providing supervision of students in a safe, supportive, and positive classroom climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to ensure individualized programs are being followed and process towards IEP goals is met.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Instructional Delivery:
    1. Collaborates with the Special Education Teacher and Director to plan, organize, and implement specific assignments and activities in accordance with IEP goals and providing and/or modifying instruction/curriculum. Prepares instructional materials as required.
    2. Follows daily schedule and school procedures, as well as implements student programming, as directed.
    3. Carry out self-care programs with students including toileting duties, feeding, tooth brushing and grooming as necessary.
    4. Ability to assist students in completion of a wide range of academic subjects including Functional Math (ex. Counting money, telling time, etc.), Functional Reading (reading street signs, job ads, etc.), Daily Living (ex. hygiene, current events, meal preparation, and Vocational Experience (ex. completing resume, customer service skills, punctuality, and job performance).
  2. Assessment and Evaluation of Student Performance:
    1. Maintains accurate documentation of activities, student progress, and behavior modification plans.
  3. Classroom Management:
    1. Utilize time efficiently and effectively.
    2. Maintain classroom order and control.
    3. Require and monitor student adherence to rules and procedures.
    4. Use verbal and nonverbal skills to control student conduct.
    5. Prevent and de-escalate inappropriate behavior using reasonable sanctions.
    6. Maintain classroom procedures/routines that support student learning.
    7. Utilize the least restrictive option when managing potentially unsafe behaviors.
    8. Maintains immaculate cleanliness standards in classrooms and restrooms.
  4. Establish Appropriate Relationship & Communication:
    1. Interacts with all internal and external customers in a friendly and professional manner.
    2. The ability to be flexible, function as a team member, and take initiative when needed.
    3. Maintain good interpersonal relations with peers and a wide variety of professional staff affiliated with the program. Interact/communicate and engage with students as directed by professional staff.
  5. Professional Growth and Responsibilities:
    1. Be punctual with school, classes, meetings etc.
    2. Support policies/procedures when dealing with students/parents.
    3. Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to students/school/parents.
    4. Show respect, interest and consideration for colleagues and parents.
    5. Adjust plans and schedule to accommodate programs/activities.
    6. Participate in school-related functions when appropriate.
    7. Adhere to school policies, rules, curriculum and content standards.
    8. Work to establish & maintain open lines of communication with Administration and utilize the chain of command.
    9. Accept constructive criticism & follow up on actions for improving performance.
    10. Display a professional image in conduct and appearance.
    11. Select appropriate channels for resolving concerns and/or problems.
    12. Participates in professional development/continuing education programs as required /recommended by the Special Education Director and/or Director of Training.
    13. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum age of 19 years
  • Pass a State & National background screen.
  • Valid Driver’s License (must be able to transport students to different vocation sites in company van or personal vehicle).
  • Prior experience working with individuals with disabilities in a special education setting (preferred)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • College degree in education or social sciences preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPECATIONS:

  • Basic understanding of children’s emotional, physical, intellectual, and social needs.
  • Ability to weigh options, think clearly and evaluate.
  • Ability to deal with multiple tasks and to organize effectively.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with
  • administration, students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to handle classroom situations with fairness and patience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to bend, lift and carry objects of varying size weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to travel to different places around town as needed with a work van or personal transportation.
