Refining Chemist II/Advanced Job Summary: Marathon Petroleum Los Angeles Refinery, located in Carson, CA, is seeking a n experienced Chemist. Our Chemist will provide technical support to ensure laboratory complies with ASTM D6299 laboratory quality control requirements such as, but not limited to, monitoring statistical quality control (SQC) charts, investigating statistical deviations in control data, determination of SQC samples, and validation of instrumentation. The hours of the position are flexible they can be: 5 days/8 hours OR 4 days onsite/1 day remote OR 9/80's. This position will support on-call 24/7 to answer questions remotely typically happening two times a month. This specific position will not work additional full shifts to support Turnarounds. Key Responsibilities: Provide technical support to ensure laboratory complies with ASTM D6299 laboratory quality control requirements such as, but not limited to, monitoring statistical quality control (SQC) charts, investigating statistical deviations in control data, determination of SQC samples, and validation of instrumentation. Monitor test results for compliance with product and operating specifications. Coordinate, analyze, and report proficiency testing program data for the site Ensure compliance to regulatory/PBMS standards (EPA, CARB, etc…) in assigned area. Maintain data logbooks, calibration records, and maintenance logs in accordance to set Quality Assurance procedures. Troubleshoot, maintain, and verify laboratory instrumentation. Work with operations and provide technical assistance to identify, investigate, and resolve process discrepancies. Provide analytical support to internal and external clients. Participate in audits and drive resolution to audit findings. Perform technical non-routine investigations, tasks, or experiments as required. Properly pack and ship hazardous material to outside labs per DOT and IATA Hazardous Shipping requirements. Train other lab personnel on laboratory test methods. Oversee testing performed by hourly personnel in assigned area. Participate in departmental safety program. Set example for safety awareness. Implement ongoing quality improvement initiatives. Substitute for Laboratory Supervisor or Lab Foreman as necessary Prepare detailed report and presentations as required by management. Support off-hours duties like plant shutdowns and routine on-call support. Work with Products Control Department leads to champion Product Quality Efforts Point of contact for LIMS administration Education, Experience and Skills: Minimum Qualifications Must have a Bachelors of Science in related field plus 16 hours of college chemistry. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date) Must have at least 3 years of laboratory experience in manufacturing, environmental, third party lab or related industry. Must have basic understanding of the composition, properties, reactions, and structures of chemical substances. Must be able to work with mathematical concepts and solve practical problems. Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook. Must be proficient with LIMS systems. Must have excellent team building skills, adaptable to changing priorities and excellent communication skills due to working with a wide variety of audiences including management and external vendors. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions. Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical. Must have a valid driver’s license. (MPC determines valid status.) Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship. Travel Requirement is around 10%.
