The Director of EHS is responsible for leading the Bristol site EHS function. Working with the site leadership team, the incumbent is responsible for driving and maintaining a highly compliant safety culture across multiple functions and throughout the organization at the Bristol. Site. Working collaboratively with the Abzena EHS teams, the role is also responsible for developing and delivering strategic plans and projects to ensure attainment of the company's goals relative to EHS. In addition, the EHS Director will be a member of the Site Leadership Team (SLT).

Responsibilities

  • Enhance the overall site safety culture resulting in increased employee engagement and the reduction in unsafe conditions and behaviors.
  • Drive, monitor and report progress against established goals and manage Environmental, Health and Safety processes and programs.
  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of handling highly potent materials, industrial hygiene, air, water, waste, ergonomics, chemical and laboratory safety, etc.
  • Provide in-depth technical knowledge on EHS compliance standards and issues, especially state environment regulations.
  • Provide technical consultations that include assessment and management of EHS issues and risks arising from operations, to prevent incidents, protect company assets and business affairs.
  • Inspect, assess, monitor, investigate and/or recommend corrective and preventative actions.
  • Design and implement safety programs.
  • Remain accountable for incident handling and reporting of EHS&S issues.
  • Assist and guide internal and external customers with regards to Environmental, Health, and Safety including special projects, new products, and complaints or concerns.
  • Serve as site EHS&S compliance program owner to interpret EHS&S regulations and develop standards, procedures and programs that ensure compliance include, but is not limited to laboratory chemical hygiene, safety, ergonomic, hazardous waste management, and industrial hygiene.
  • Manage site safety committees.
  • Ensure that complaints, incidents, compliance deviations and enforcement actions are fully investigated and work with other departments to ensure corrective and preventative measures are taken.
  • Implement and continuously improve loss control programs such as emergency response, business continuity, crisis management planning, access control and building/life safety consulting other leaders as appropriate.
  • Provide management and daily leadership of security team at the site and overall emergency response plans including business continuity and crisis management plan.
  • Manage the medical surveillance program including but not limited to respiratory protection, hearing conservation and employee exposure monitoring.
  • Work with the site Operational leadership and Quality Assurance team to ensure that cross contamination controls are in place and remain effective during cGMP manufacturing operations.
  • Adhere and maintain 100% compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies and host inspections conducted by these authorities.
  • Prepare, submit (as appropriate, by law) and document all Homeland Security, EPA and OSHA requirements up to but not limited to OSHA 300 log, CAA, CWA, RCRA, storm water / wastewater, and Tier Il reports, if applicable.
  • Oversee all chemical and hazardous waste management and disposal, including transportation.
  • Provide input, support and oversight to the site CapEx program. Provide EHS oversight to approved capital projects ensuring safe work practices during construction activities.
  • Develop and implement training, based on a competency framework, for all personnel, including contractors, to assure understanding and compliance of EHS&S programs and environmental permit conditions.
  • Interact, report and provide company representation to regulatory bodies relating to particular aspects of EHS affairs, compliance matters, enforcement actions, remedial activities and regulatory affairs.
  • Interface with external professional services, customers, regulators, industry and represent Abzena at public meetings, hearings and perform public relations duties.
  • Partner with Human Resources regarding Workers' Compensation program including individual case management where appropriate.
  • Maintain Company's HBP (Hazardous Business Plan) utilizing CERS (California Environmental Reporting System).
  • Maintain and update as necessary the company's IIPP (Injury Illness and Prevention Program), Chemical Hygiene and Biological Safety Plans and Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies, industrial hygiene, or safety management.
  • Experience working in operations that handle highly potent compounds with OEL’s to ng/m3.
  • 15 years of experience in a GMP laboratory and GMP operational setting with increasing responsibilities.
  • Preferred 10 year experience managing direct reports.
  • Possesses OSHA HAZWOPPER Certificate
  • Proven ability to lead and maintain a highly compliant safety culture across multiple functions and throughout organizations.
  • A Proven ability to communicate complex technical information in understandable form through all levels of the organization including customers and other external partied.
