Introduction:

The position will be guided by ACDC’s Corporate Values Platform in all activities.

This role will be onsite at the designated Emergency Operations Center for the duration of the mission.

Position Summary:

  • Job Title: Public Information Officer
  • Full Time or Part Time: FT - 12 hour work days expected
  • Temporary/Seasonal/Regular: Temporary
  • Compensation: $45-$50/hour
  • Travel/Location: Onsite, Florida location EOC

Mission of Role/Position Summary:

The Public Information Officer (PIO) is responsible for communicating with the public, media, and/or coordinating with other agencies, as necessary, with incident related information requirements. The PIO is responsible for developing and releasing information about the incident to the news media, incident personnel, and other appropriate agencies and organizations. Depending on the size or complexity of the incident, a lead PIO should be assigned for each incident and may have assistants, as necessary, including supporting PIOs representing other responding agencies or jurisdictions.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Establish relationships with local news outlets to disseminate lifesaving information.
  • Communicate with reporters locally, nationally, and globally.
  • Issue public statements for the Florida State Emergency Response Team.
  • Monitor and ensure accuracy of social media and news outlets.
  • Share critical information on social media and keep FloridaDisaster.org updated.
  • Work with Command Staff to relay activation priorities and develop media materials.
  • Manage the Joint Information Center and issue emergency alerts with warning staff. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written, particularly in areas of Recovery, Resilience, and Emergency Management.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to develop Disaster Recovery frameworks for clients as requested.
  • Ability to make project management decisions based on analytical skills. Report and communicate to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct program evaluation and analysis based on industry standards.
  • Ability to work across multiple functions and divisions on various projects.
  • Proven record of accomplishment with project management best practices and knowledge.
  • Ability to train others and lead people/projects and/or programs with minimal senior leadership oversight.
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships with a variety of public and private sector clients.
  • Demonstrated success in thinking critically, strategic planning, and problem-solving.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt quickly to changes in roles, responsibilities, priorities, and projects.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May have lead responsibilities within projects or small teams depending on function with senior level support.

Expected Hours of Work:

Schedule may vary, but 12-hour work days can be expected. Work on evenings and weekends may be required. Dependability and punctuality are paramount.

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel to work site.
  • Must be willing to travel and deploy to client sites for extended periods of time.

Physical Demands:

  • Mobility required on-site with clients.
  • Sitting or standing for hours at a time.
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time if needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. repetitively throughout the day and as needed.

Working Environment:

  • Work in an office or home environment or be deployed to the field which may require working outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
  • Work may be on-site with clients ex: EOC, hospital, debris sites or local government buildings.
  • All AC Disaster Consulting (ACDC) positions are remote work site positions with the home location agreed upon at time of hire.
  • If the remote work site locations change, ACDC Human Resources must be made aware, and leadership needs to approve any site changes for business registration and payroll tax purposes.

Experience and Education Required

  • Bachelor degree in Communications, Emergency Management or other applicable field.
  • 3 years of advanced or subject matter expert level knowledge/experience working in two or more emergency management functions.
  • 3 years of experience disseminating public information, with demonstrated experience communicating via various outlets including social media, public speaking during at least two activations or exercises.
  • 3 years of customer service experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel.
  • The following training courses must be completed prior to requesting the task book:
    • IS-100, IS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400 IS-700, IS-800, E/G/L-0191, E/L-0958, O-0305

Experience and Education Preferred

  • Proficient with Salesforce.
  • Five or more years professional experience in emergency management.
  • Master’s degree in Emergency Management or a related field.
  • Applicable Certifications:
    • Certified Emergency Manager (CEM)
  • Proficient with Web EOC
  • ICS position-specific certification preferred.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without employer sponsored visa is required. We are not able to employ those located outside of the US.
  • Must pass company and any applicable client background check and reference check upon offer of employment.
