Acacia Pet Clinic is Hiring a Registered Veterinary Technician Near San Jose, CA

Duties/Responsibilities:

● Clinical Duties/Patient Care:

- Prepares treatment rooms and animals for surgery, such as shaving and scrubbing surgical areas.

- Cares for and monitors the condition of pets recovering from surgery, ensuring they are comfortable and clean.

- Observes the behavior and condition of animals and monitors their clinical symptoms.

- Administers emergency first aid, such as emergency resuscitation or other life-saving procedures.

- Gives enemas and performs catheterizations, ear flushes, intravenous feedings, or gavages.

- Dresses and suture wounds and apply splints or other protective devices.

- Bathes animals, clips nails or claws, cleans ears, and brushes or cuts animal's hair.

- Performs dental work, such as cleaning, polishing, or extracting teeth.

- Trains staff members and maintains training program.

- Participates in continuing education and professional organizations.

- Stays updated with the latest advancements in veterinary technology.

● Support Veterinarians:

- Assists veterinarians during examinations and surgical procedures.

- Administers anesthesia to animals under the direction of a veterinarian and monitors animal's responses to anesthetics so that dosages can be adjusted.

- Provides veterinarians with the correct equipment or instruments as needed.

- Takes animals into treatment areas and assists with physical exams or procedures, such as restraining animals.

- Aids with animal euthanasia and the disposal of remains.

- Prepares and administers medications, vaccines, serums, or treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

- Prepares/fills prescriptions, measures medications, labels containers, and stores medications correctly, as directed by the veterinarian.

- Assists with physical therapy and rehabilitation.

● Laboratory and Diagnostics:

- Takes and develops/processes diagnostic radiographs using X-ray equipment.

- Draws blood and other samples for diagnostic testing.

- Collects, prepares, and labels samples for laboratory testing, culture, or microscopic examination.

- Performs laboratory tests on blood, urine, or feces, such as urinalyses, blood counts, and parasite tests, to assist in diagnosing and treating animal health problems.

- Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment.

● Clinic Maintenance:

- Maintains laboratory, research, or treatment records and inventories of pharmaceuticals, equipment, or supplies.

- Assists in maintaining the overall cleanliness and organization of the clinic.

- Cleans and sanitizes animal holding areas, cages, surgery suites, examination rooms, or animal loading or unloading facilities to control the spread of disease.

- Monitors and maintains controlled drug inventory, other medications, medical supplies, and related logbooks.

- Notifies the practice manager or veterinarian when orders need to be placed when inventory of medical supplies is low.

- Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains instruments, equipment, machinery, or materials to ensure proper working conditions.

- Adheres to safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure a safe environment for animals and staff.

● Administrative Duties:

- Maintains thorough patient records, updating details of treatments, medications, and test results.

- Schedules appointments and procedures for animals.

- Performs various office, clerical, or accounting duties, such as reception, billing, bookkeeping, or selling products.

● Client Interactions:

- Creates a positive experience for both the pet owners and their pets.

- Discusses and updates clients on their medical health, post-operative status, and post-visit care for their pets.

- Educates and advises pet owners on animal health care, behavior problems, and nutrition.

- Handles any client concerns with empathy and professionalism.

- When clients are upset or angry, involves a management team member to prevent escalation or when necessary.

- Answers any questions asked by clients and manages follow-up communications.

- Directs clients to the appropriate person if they have medical questions (no medical advice is to be given over the phone unless stated by a doctor).

● Other Duties:

- Follows/performs any other job-related instructions and duties requested by anyone authorized to give instructions or assignments.

● Maintains professional conversations (no gossiping) while working with clients, vendor reps, doctors, and staff members.

● Understands all vaccinations, core vs. elective, and vaccine protocols, explaining their pets' needs/requirements well to clients.

● Has proficiency with computer systems and software: Microsoft Office, word processing software, practice

management/medical software (Idexx Neo and IDEXX Lab Station), and label-making software

Education and Experience:

● A.S. in Veterinary Technology or equivalent.

● Appropriate state certification and licensing are required.

● At least two years of relevant experience (clinical environment is preferred).

● Proficiency with computer systems and software, especially those related to appointment scheduling and record-keeping

● General understanding of animal physiology and veterinary terminology.

Physical Requirements:

● Prolonged periods of standing, reaching, bending, and lifting.

● Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times and have physical stamina for holding/lifting moving animals.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $27.00 - $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
