Job DescriptionJob Title: Director of DevelopmentReports to: President & CEOJob Status: Exempt, Salaried, Full-timePrimary Location: Detroit, MI Through tax assistance, advocacy, small business technical assistance, and partnerships, Accounting Aid Society is focused on creating an economy that works for everyone. Accounting Aid seeks a self-starter who is as invested in economic mobility and poverty alleviation as we are. The Director of Development plays an instrumental role in driving the success of the organization, overseeing all of the Accounting Aid Society’s fundraising, marketing, and communications efforts. They will serve as a member of the leadership team for the organization and will work closely with the President and the board of directors to ensure that all objectives in these areas are realized.Accounting Aid Society, a Crain’s Best-Managed Nonprofit, fosters an always-learning and innovative environment, offering best-in-class benefits and values employee well-being and collaboration. The Director of Development joins a team that includes leadership, administrative support, a marketing and communications intern, a contract media and publicity company, a grants strategist, and a grants researcher and writer.   • Serve as a member of the organization’s staff leadership team, designing and implementing strategies to ensure that all of the organization’s goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of professionals, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing fundraising team culture, promoting teamwork and innovation.
  • Set clear objectives and expectations, monitor progress, and ensure the team's goals are aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, facilitate professional development opportunities, and foster a positive work environment.
Fundraising Strategies
  • Create and execute a strategic fundraising plan to meet the organization's financial goals and support its mission.
  • Identify potential funding sources, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies.
  • Design innovative fundraising campaigns and initiatives to engage existing and prospective donors.
  • Continuously evaluate fundraising efforts and adjust strategies as needed to optimize results.
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, sponsors, and funding partners.
  • Ability to develop personalized cultivation plans for major donors and lead efforts to secure major gifts and estate gifts is a plus
  • Coordinate donor appreciation and recognition initiatives to ensure continued engagement and support.
  • Regularly communicate with donors to provide updates on organizational achievements and impact.
Fundraising Events and Campaigns
  • Plan and oversee fundraising events, including an annual signature fundraising event, as well as smaller cultivation events, and appeals.
  • Develop event budgets, timelines, and marketing strategies to maximize participation and revenue generation.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure smooth execution of events.
  • Evaluate event outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and implement lessons learned for future events.
Budgeting and Financial Management
  • Collaborate with the finance department to develop and monitor the fundraising budget.
  • Track fundraising revenue, expenses, and performance indicators to assess progress and identify growth opportunities.
  • Provide regular reports on fundraising results and key performance metrics to the executive team and board of directors.
Job QualificationsSuccessful candidates will possess all or many of the following qualifications and/or skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, business administration, marketing, or related discipline). A master's degree is desirable.
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising, particularly in securing major gifts and grants, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques, and best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including persuasive and compelling writing abilities for donor communications.
  • Demonstrated experience in team leadership and management, fostering collaboration, and achieving results through others.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills with a demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with donors and funding partners.
  • Strong organizational and project management abilities, with the capability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using fundraising software and databases.
  • Experience working with social service agencies in the metro Detroit area and having a familiarity with the nonprofit sector and knowledge of philanthropic trends, is advantageous.
