Description:
Essential Job Duties:
Monitor daily animal health and welfare while performing daily animal health observations, animal husbandry duties to maintain quality and health of research animals, to include: perform daily water bottle and cage checks; provide appropriate food and water; perform cage changing and/or cage cleaning as required; record animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocols.
Maintain proper sanitation, environment, and health status of housing units.
Receipt, inspection, identification, transportation and housing of all incoming animals as directed by immediate supervisor.
Maintain/verify proper record keeping (census, animal health, and document sanitation and equipment maintenance).
Strictly follow all procedures necessary to maintain animal housing areas including room or facility personnel entry; personnel protective equipment use, spraying in all equipment and materials into controlled areas.
Provide technical support for LARC and research investigators (performing prescribed treatments , sample collection for sentinels, weaning litters, and administering diets).
Maintain and stock all animal holding, necropsy, and procedure rooms. Maintain feed & bedding area, rotate and label feed per SOP.
Perform euthanasia of animals, as directed.
Assists higher level Animal Care Technicians and facility users and performs other related duties as assigned.
Participate in continuing education and training.

Must Have Skills:
1) High school diploma or equivalent required.
2) Six months relevant animal care experience preferred.
3) Must be able to have indirect and direct physical contact with multiple species of animals.
4) Must be willing to participate in Occupational Health Program for LARC employees, including receiving immunizations recommended by Occupational Health Services.
5) Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and exhibit interpersonal skills that are conducive to the effective communication and that contribute to a congenial work environment. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a professional manner with clients, customers, coworkers, and supervisors. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
6) This position requires the ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls. It also requires the ability to move items weighing up to 40 pounds. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential duties with or without an accommodation.
