Acton Academy of Bergen County is Hiring a Robotics Coach - FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Near Closter, NJ

Overview:
As a Robotics Coach for the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), you will lead and mentor a team of students to design, build, and program a robot to compete in the annual FTC challenge. This position requires expertise in robotics, engineering, and programming, as well as strong leadership and mentorship skills to guide students through the competition season.

Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Provide leadership and guidance to a team of students, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
  • Technical Mentorship: Mentor students in the design, construction, and programming of a competitive robot that meets the requirements of the FTC challenge.
  • Skill Development: Teach students relevant technical skills, including programming languages (e.g., Java, Blockly), CAD design, and mechanical engineering principles.
  • Strategy Development: Assist the team in developing effective strategies for competing in the FTC challenge, including game analysis, robot design optimization, and match planning.
  • Project Management: Oversee the planning and execution of the robot build process, ensuring that tasks are completed on time and within budget.
  • Safety: Prioritize safety in all aspects of the robotics program, including the use of tools and machinery, handling of materials, and adherence to competition rules.
  • Communication: Maintain open and transparent communication with team members, parents, school officials, and other stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Documentation: Keep thorough documentation of the team's progress, including design iterations, code revisions, and competition performance.
  • Team Spirit: Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and gracious professionalism among team members, encouraging collaboration and mutual respect both on and off the field.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with robotics competitions, particularly the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), as a coach, mentor, or participant.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in FTC, such as Java, Blockly, or LabVIEW.
  • Strong technical skills in CAD design, mechanical engineering, and electronics prototyping.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, and volunteers.
  • Passion for STEM education and the mission of FIRST Robotics, with a commitment to inspiring and empowering young people in science and technology.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as robotics, engineering, computer science, or education - preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Availability to attend regular team meetings, practices, and competitions, which may include evenings and weekends during the FTC season.
  • Ability to travel with the team to regional and national FTC events, as needed.
  • Willingness to undergo background checks and comply with all child safety policies and procedures.
