Our Development & Origination team is looking for a talented Director of Interconnection & Transmission to help support the efforts of our fast-growing company. Overview

This position will work in our Development & Origination team and will have full responsibly for all interconnection activities of new generation/storage facilities and transmission analysis and solutions to support strategic development and deal origination efforts. The qualified candidate will rely on technical expertise mixed with creative problem solving and dynamic decision making in a fast-paced environment to provide feedback directly to the senior leadership team at Adapture Renewables. This is a senior position within the team and a key role in driving the growth of the company. Candidates must be highly motivated, passionate about renewable energy, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The Director of Transmission & Interconnection oversees all things transmission for our portfolio, including the generation interconnection process, power flow and other system studies, analysis of transmission expansion plans and strategies involving the use of long-term firm, and other transmission services and managing consultants in support of these efforts. The Transmission & Interconnection function is integral to the optimal siting of prospective projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage the generation interconnection process with utilities and ISOs/RTO, including interconnection applications, the negotiations of interconnection contracts, and de-risking the system upgrade elements of the interconnection contracts by replicating ISO/Utility study methodologies and providing alternative cost/mitigation proposals.
  • Identify, direct, and manage external consultants to perform power flow studies, including injection analysis, FCITC, deliverability studies, and others as needed.
  • Implement creative, timely and cost-efficient methods of screening large areas for transmission capacity availability to support greenfield project prospecting.
  • Innovate new strategies to conduct transmission system analysis based on underlying constraints and study methodologies specific to each RTO/ISO to support greenfield prospecting activities.
  • Determine curtailment potential and locational marginal pricing (LMP) differentials resulting from transmission constraints to identify optimum project sites and determine economic risk for projects.
  • Manage the analysis of power flow results performed by both consultants and by utility/ISO counterparts. Oversee queue attrition analysis and proposals of alternate mitigation strategies.
  • Track key merchant and utility transmission projects and monitor generation retirements and new renewable generation additions.
  • Build relationships with key utility/ISO partners and track transmission expansion plans; and lobby for projects beneficial to Adapture Renewables’ portfolio.
  • Provide regular updates to the Development & Origination team on congestion findings and key merchant/utility transmission projects to target for greenfield efforts.
  • Perform due diligence on potential M&A transactions by reviewing needed transmission upgrades and dependencies, evaluating transmission assumptions within third-party Transmission Congestion reports.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master's degree or MBA desirable.
  • 5 years of experience in transmission planning at ISO, consulting firm, or electric utility.
  • Experience with power flow software (Powerworld, TARA, GE PSLF or Siemens PSS/E).
  • Relevant experience with generator interconnection procedure and contracts, including related studies and production cost modeling in at least one relevant ISOs (e.g., CAISO, PJM, MISO, SPP, NYISO, etc.) and other non-ISO regions, including familiarity with software programs and study methodologies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency managing the generation interconnection process in at least one relevant ISO marketing.
  • Proven ability to manage power transmission/interconnection consultants, including identification of qualified vendors and negotiations of contracts.
  • Willing and able to travel as much as 25% of time to project sites/regional offices and attend transmission planning meetings, as needed.
  • 2 years working for a renewable energy focused IPP is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Transmission Services Agreements (TSAs) for wheeling across balancing authorities, power markets, and dispatch protocols within applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and RTO regions.
  • Knowledge of production cost modeling software (PROMOD IV, GE Maps, Aurora).
  • Able to communicate effectively in both commercial and technical venues. Strong presentation skills.
