JOB TITLE: Coordinator - Related Services (Special Services)

REPORTS TO: Director - Special Services

WAGE: Exempt
 
PAY GRADE: AI 3

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Coordinator - Related Services, under the direction of the Director of Special Services Accountability & Assessment, is responsible for ensuring the district maintains compliance with the statutory requirements of IDEA and the state accountability systems including Results Driven Accountability, State application program reports and department compliance initiatives. The Special Education Related Services Coordinator must possess a clear understanding of the relationship between the development, implementation, monitoring and instructional impact of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), the Full and Individualized Evaluation (FIE), supplementary aids/supports and related services for students receiving special education.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University
  • Three years of teaching experience in special education
  • Valid certification in the field of related services

Preferred:

  • Valid Texas teacher certification in special education
  • Supervisory and/or administrative certification
  • Five years experience as a special education teacher and/or in a campus special education role
  • T-TESS Certification

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Thorough knowledge of federal and state special education federal and state law
  • Comprehensive understanding of the individual needs of students in special education
  • Extensive understanding of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
  • Extensive knowledge of effective special education instructional programs, services, and practices
  • Ability to successfully coach related service staff, teachers, and campus administrators in providing for the needs of students served in special education
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices and research-based programs for students receiving special education services
  • Ability to evaluate related services, instructional programs and teaching effectiveness
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Ability to coordinate services across district functions
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of learning and behavior requirements of special needs students

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Develop, implement and actively monitor a system to supervise Related Service staff and ensure the fidelity of program implementation.
  • Supervise and coordinate related service staff such as VI, O&M, OT/PT, APE, audiology, deaf-ed, and bilingual itinerant services
  • Develop, implement and monitor a system to ensure staff are responsive to the timelines for requesting evaluation consents, completing evaluations, preparing for and attending Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings
  • Prepare and communicate regarding timely monthly compliance reports for all schools, including district level summaries
  • Establish, maintain, and actively monitor staff responses to requested compliance updates
  • Initiate and actively provide direct training, coaching, monitoring and support to campus assigned IEP staff facilitating and delivering IEP services for compliance
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and develop and facilitate professional development for special education coordinators and applicable leadership staff specific to IEP compliance
  • Develop, monitor and review of systems to enable and establish a plan for improvement
  • Respond and conduct monthly documented training, coaching sessions and/or guidance for staff in regards to noted compliance issues
  • Initiate communication and provide specific data to the Director of Special Services- Assessment and Accountability surrounding IEP compliance status and updates
  • Assist in the completion of all assigned local, state and federal reports
  • Assist with the supervision of the compliance of the ARD process
  • Monitor and audit compliance of special education records.
  • Support related service staff with direct/indirect service and evaluation issues.
  • Ensure compliances with federal, state and local requirements for the delivery of services, assessment and the ARD process in relation to related service staff.
  • Continue to remain current in all special education issues regarding special education related services.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Conduct employee evaluations for Related Service staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility, standing, prolonged sitting, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, reaching/repetitive hand motions, and the ability to work with frequent interruptions. May be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards. Mental demands: Ability to maintain emotional control under stress; ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data, ability to be effective in both oral and written communication. Travel within the district as required.
