Position: Assistant Superintendent, Metropolitan Districts

Reports To: Parks Superintendent

Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm*

Pay Range: $62,000 - $65,000 salary or DOE.

ROLE

The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for oversight of complex park and recreation distrcit and relevant Irrigation Systems to include maintenance of systems, coordination with District control clocks, setting design limits, and oversight of all assigned irrigation system locations. Oversight of water amenities to include 6 lakes, beach operations, waterpark, water quality management. During the non-irrigation season, will participate in maintenance of relevant systems in accordance with the standards, policies, and procedures that ensure the mission of the Districts are achieved. Oversight of agricultural operations to include fruit trees, row crops, and urban farm operation. We contain the largest non-pot irrigation system in Colorado, Assistant Superintendent services all parks, open spaces, orchards, farms, and 5,500 residential and commercial lots. Must have advanced knowledge and be able to troubleshoot irrigation control systems, equipment operation and maintenance, and basic horticultural practices. This position works cooperatively with the Water Enterprise Fund on issues related to the delivery of water to the irrigated areas. Performs all other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Will supervise and train seasonal employees that will assist in the irrigation and maintenance operations. May assume some of the Park Supervisor responsibilities in their absence.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure water use is within the design limits of the irrigation system.
  • Control and reduce the water use and expense of general fund irrigated area.
  • Monitor pump station output and community water use of irrigated areas.
  • Lead pressurization, maintenance, repair, and winterization of District irrigation systems.
  • Program District controlled irrigation clocks.
  • Facilitating seasonal flushing of irrigation systems.

Seasonal:

  • Late Fall - Storm water system maintenance – drain inlets and outlets.
  • Winter - Participate in annual maintenance of the mowers and vehicle fleet.
  • Assist in the establishment of farmland crops.
  • Ongoing maintenance of the storm sewer system after rain events.
  • Continuous – evaluate and respond to resident requests.

Management:

  • Participate in hiring, training, and supervising of seasonal staff.
  • Assist in developing and implementing all maintenance programs.
  • Adhere and ensure that all on-site personnel understand and follow all guidelines, policies and procedures established by the District.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional, helpful, knowledgeable manner, so as to convey utmost professionalism at all times.

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent education – Required
  • Able to lift up-to 50 pounds - Required
  • 2 years of supervisory experience - Preferred
  • Additional education or relevant certifications – Preferred
  • 3 years equipment maintenance – Preferred

Special Skills and Certifications:

  • Accredited Irrigation Auditor - Preferred.
  • Skilled in tree maintenance and chainsaw operations.
  • Comply with and have knowledge of all state and local pesticide applicator laws.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience managing complex irrigation systems (i.e., large communities, golf courses, etc.).
  • Must have advanced knowledge of irrigation control systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and cleaning control valves and irrigation heads.
  • Basic horticultural practices.
  • Determine irrigation needs based on daily evapotranspiration needs, current soil moisture, and turning off or adjusting the irrigation system when needs are reduced.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills including electrical, hydraulic, and drainage troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work effectively and professionally with a diverse range of both internal and external contacts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • In addition to regular business hours, this position may require hours at night and/or weekends to travel and attend District meetings, activities and events.
  • This position will work in the field primarily in all types of weather including heat, cold, rain, and continually varying environmental conditions.
