JOB SUMMARY

The CNO will serve as a key member of the leadership team at River Oaks Hospital, responsible for directing nursing and related patient care programs within the organization’s primary acute care setting. As a key senior leader guiding nursing operations and care delivery processes, the successful candidate will bring a strong strategic understanding of the discipline of nursing, team-based care models, quality-safety and improvement knowledge, team member well-being and engagement, healthy work environments, staffing/ workforce development and operational effectiveness knowledge and experience.

The incumbent will have proven ability to influence change and to create alignment with other team members and departmental leaders, support services, finance, facilities, IT and others in a manner that advances shared goals and effective relationships.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Specific responsibilities will include the day-to-day oversight of the Hospital’s inpatient and structured outpatient clinical and patient care areas, including the direct supervision of the Unit Directors & Managers.
  • Set the vision for nursing practice in the delivery of safe, timely, efficient, equitable and patient centered care.
  • Provide clinical leadership, strategic and long-term goals for the nursing staff.
  • Direct, supervise and evaluate work activities of all nursing personnel.
  • Anticipates and effectively manage changes in census and acuity and allocates nursing resources based on measurement of patient acuity/care needed.
  • Role model expectations related to customer service and demonstrated sense of urgency related to the importance of patient safety.
  • Determine, assign, and assess performance objectives for nursing department.
  • Organize, coordinate, develop and review policies, procedures, and nursing protocols within the facility to meet all regulatory, compliance and quality care standards.
  • Responsible for the quality of care, operational and financial efficiency of the nursing department.
  • Lead and develop the nursing staff within the facility, providing performance goals, feedback, and development opportunities.
  • Set and carry out policies, goals and procedures for their function or department.
  • Evaluate the quality of care, staff's work and the operational efficiency and effectiveness of the function or department.
  • Develop and oversee functions or departmental budget and reporting.
  • Provide direct care as needed.
  • Direct and conduct recruitment, hiring and training of staff.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to adapt written and in person communication to a wide range of audiences.
  • Cultivate continuous learning within a professional practice environment to advance nursing and interprofessional education, team member well-being, and professional growth as antecedents to retention of a highly engaged workforce.

  • Assesses the needs of the Nursing Department and makes recommendations to the Regional CNO and the hospital CEO.
  • Development and implementation of the Hospital’s strategic and operational plans for all clinical programming of the Hospital.
  • Responsibly for providing documentation to the support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions, signing performance plans and appraisals and resolving informal grievances.
  • Represent the Hospital in the community by participating in various community-based activities and/or serving on volunteer boards related to the mission, vision and core business of the Hospital.

The Chief Nurse Officer (CNO) performs such other duties as may be necessary in the best interest of the hospital and carries out those duties as well as other duties which may be specifically delegated by the Chief Executive Officer

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited nursing program required, Master's Degree in Nursing or related field required.
  • Five (5) years’ clinical experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in management; previous CNO experience preferred.
  • Computer skills required with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Some evening or weekend work will be required.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited nursing program required, Master's Degree in Nursing or related field required.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE

  • Current Texas RN License
  • BLS, ACLS PALS required.

KNOWLEDGE SKILS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a health care management position supported by a demonstrated record of achievement and administrative responsibility.
  • Strong clinical practice and fiscal skills with a knowledge of health care regulatory, compliance and accreditation requirements and standards.
  • The ability to motivate and drive a hospital culture of excellence.
  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and JCAHO regulations
