Advocate Aurora is Hiring a Cytotechnologist, PRN Near Rosemont, IL

Major Responsibilities:
  • Evaluates cell samples microscopically to determine the absence or presence of malignant cells, premalignant changes, viral changes or inflammatory processes.
    • 1)Responsible for issuing a final diagnostic report on gynecological cases that are within normal limits.
    • 2)Provides a preliminary diagnosis on gynecological and non-gynecological cases which require further evaluation by a pathologist.
    • 3)Correlates, reviews and documents abnormal cytology findings with biopsy results.
    • 4)Utilizes knowledge of LIS, HIS, and personal computer systems as they apply to the laboratory.
    • 5)Performs departmental and shift specific duties as required.
    • 6)Complies with requirements of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and other regulatory agencies. Includes documentation of the number hours spent screening within the 24 hr period and the number of slides examined within the 24 hr period.
    • 7)Maintains a clean and safe work area. Follows established laboratory safety procedure in accordance with those of regulatory bodies such as OSHA, FDA, EPA, NRC, etc.
  • Participation in and adherence to quality control program to ensure that cytopathology reports are precise, accurate and timely.
    • 1)Participates in proficiency testing as required by law.
    • 2)Reviews previous cytology cases and patient history in accordance with Quality Assurance practices and policies.
  • Receives, identifies, accessions and records receipt of cytological specimens. Prepares specimens by centrifugation, staining and coverslipping according to prescribed procedures in order to ensure optimal cell retrieval and preparation. May instruct and advise Cyto Prep Technician in technique, troubleshooting equipment and instrumentation.
    • 1)Operates bio-hazard, fumehoods, automatic stainer, Cytyk, centrifuges and other equipment utilized in specimen processing.
  • Provision of appropriate information regarding specimen collection and case results. Provides assistance to physician with special procedures (FNA’s and other specimens) to ensure proper specimen collection and fixation.
  • Participates in development and education.
    • 1)Evaluates and validates new methodology.
    • 2)Participates in interdepartmental cross-training as required.
    • 3)Participates in continuing education.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies as required by the department.
    • 1)*Orders supplies as required according to hospital polices and procedures.
    • 2)*Follows up on backorders, missing and incorrect orders.
    • 3)*Puts supplies away appropriately.
    • 4)*Assures that all supplies are marked with date received, are logged and appropriate NFPA labels applied.
Education/Experience Required:
  • Completion of training in an approved school of Cytotechnology. Eligible for ASCP certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Previous experience in the use of a microscope is required.
  • CT(ASCP) certification pending
Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Hazardous chemical exposure and contact with infectious biological specimens and sharps are experienced on a daily basis. Ability to lift (medium -- up to 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and/ or 10-25 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly) and use keyboard and microscopy extensively may be required, dependent upon job and shift assignment. Fast paced environment with established time constraints. Turn-around time for results reporting critical due to reimbursement rates and competition from reference laboratories.
