Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for development, direction and outcome achievement of quality performance in areas of responsibility.
    • 1)Achieve site and system goals for Clinical Outcomes in all areas of responsibility.
    • 3)Communicate extensively with reporting staff and staff from other departments to receive, respond and communicate information quickly and effectively. Devise and oversee methods for corrective action regarding identified deficiencies.
    • 2)Improve department and organization's outcomes by providing leadership to performance improvement activities: a) Support process improvement activities, b) Facilitate development, maintenance and annual revision of PI plans for all areas of responsibility, c) Review and provide feedback for PI projects, d) Analyze results and develop strategies to ensure that desired clinical outcomes and standards of care are achieved and sustained, e) Provide leadership to hospital and system committees, task forces, and PI teams, f) Mentor division leadership to ensure adherence to principles of shared governance and compliance with IDPH, DNV, and other licensing/accrediting agencies.
    • 4)Ensure quality and safety of care delivery by: a) ensuring the development of competency training programs as needed; b) compliance with Culture of Safety initiatives; c) promoting evidence-based practice through a variety of initiatives, staying abreast of newly published studies and ensuring application of research results in practice; d) Developing, approving and facilitating review of department policies, procedures and protocols, e) Interpreting hospital policies and procedures to staff and ensuring that staff follows same.
    • 5)Keep abreast of current clinical and managerial practices through attendance at workshops, seminars and professional organization activities to maintain own professional growth and development.
    • 6)Serve as administrative representative to department meetings for areas within span of control and for other cross covering departments.
    • 7)Ensure overall excellence for areas within span of control by: a) Developing and implementing annual goals for each area b) Directing the overall performance of each area, c) Working with Medical Director, other physicians, and key personnel to address issues affecting each area.
    • 8)Evaluate and advocate for staffing and other clinical resources necessary to provide excellent health outcome results.
  • Directs and provides strategic planning for areas of responsibility in collaboration with department and system leadership
    • 1)Partner with nursing leaders to ensure staffing, scheduling and patient throughput optimized
    • 2)Determine opportunities and initiate strategic planning and any action plans to meet targets.
    • 3)Develop departmental short- and long-range business strategic objectives, which will ensure the continued ability of the departments to meet present and future demands of both internal and external customers
    • 4)Researching, planning, and adopting new emerging technologies, programs and services
    • 5)Projecting long term needs for departments regarding staffing, equipment, financial and physical needs.
    • 6)Preparing business plans and financial feasibility studies for special administrative assignments as requested.
    • 7)Analyzing current and future opportunities to increase volumes and revenues through nursing operations.
    • 8)Monitor impact of services on all other hospital services. Notify other areas impacted by new and/or expanded services in order that planning for those services can be accomplished.
    • 9)Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external clients/contacts to promote and ensure program growth.

  • Nursing Operations Outcomes
    • 1)Provides oversight and leadership for the Magnet Program Director for the organization.
    • 2)Demonstrates knowledge of the Magnet Recognition Program and Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators. Ensures annual submission of required documents annually, biannually and with our r-designation. Provide oversight, direction and education for Magnet site visit.
    • 3)Provide oversight for site Shared Governance-ensuring alignment of councils with nursing, hospital and system strategic objectives. Ensure onboarding and support of council members.
    • 4)Provide oversight for house wide nursing activities including but not limited to: preparation and publication of communications, annual recognition(s) and installation of shared governance officers.
    • 5)Provide oversight for Nursing Practice Leadership Committee; Nursing Research Committee
    • 6)Provide oversight for the participation in the Nursing Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI). Provide data for ongoing analysis of nursing sensitive indicators by shared governance and nursing care units.
  • Evaluates or develops programs to improve Team member Experience and satisfaction.
    • 1)Achieve system and site goals for team member satisfaction in all areas of responsibility.
    • 2)Develop/mentor leadership team to assure their ability to lead their individual service areas in alignment with the strategic goals of the organization.
    • 3)a) Conduct individual and group supervisory staff meetings to foster leader development and professional growth. b) Encourage participation in internal and external development programs in order to increase operational responsibility. c) Prepare and conduct performance evaluations on supervisory and administrative team members on an annual basis, focusing on key results, learning plans, and professional development. d) conducts rounds for influence to support and coach supervisory personnel on HR issues, especially regarding low performers. e) Model service and leadership consistent with organizational values and shared governance model.
    • 4)Develop and mentor division leadership to create self-directed work teams. Provide supervision and clinical expertise to assure that customer needs are met.Assure that performance is consistent with Professional Practice, Shared Governance principles, organization's goals and values.
    • 5)Evaluate and hold leaders accountable for team member performance in their areas. Encourage the recognition of high performers, address low performers, and improve overall team member performance
    • 6)Review, recommend and restructure, when necessary, the job requirements, pay practices and working conditions of team members in order to foster job satisfaction,maintain a high level of team member retention and meet productivity staffing objectives.
    • 7)Facilitate state-of-the-art models of care delivery, spanning continuum of care and ensure that the principles of Shared Governance are evident across all areas.
    • 8)Coordinate recruitment activities with Human Resources to attract prospective leaders. Facilitate the peer interviewing process for all hires in division. Interview, hire and train and retain leadership for division.
    • 9)Establish a positive, collaborative workforce able to meet deadlines, customer needs and fluctuating workloads with limited resources.
  • Comprehensive oversight and directs financial management and provides guidance to direct reports in management and evaluation of operational services to ensure safety, quality and cost effectiveness.
    • 1)Ensure financial targets for all areas of responsibility are met.
    • 2)Develop, implement and monitor the operating budgets for areas of responsibility, including revenue, expenses, salary planning and capital equipment sufficient to meet current and projected patient volume/service requirements.
    • 3)Monitor departments' productivity levels and work functions to ensure proper staff and resource utilization. Identify areas for operations efficiency improvement and implement changes.
    • 4)Examine monthly financial, operational and budget variance reports, analyzing activities and performance budget targets. Develop strategies/action plans to ensure that department, division, and hospital financial outcomes are achieved.
    • 5)Ensure appropriate use of IS Systems so that patient charge information is captured in a timely fashion.
    • 6)Exercise financial control via approval and processing of purchase requisitions,accounts payable vouchers, local travel and petty cash requests in accordance with established policies and procedures.
    • 7)Initiate cost containment activities judiciously to address financial performance while balancing outcomes in other areas of responsibility.
    • 8)Ensure annual updates to charge master and EPSI reports in coordination with hospital and system wide product line requirements to ensure maximum capture of revenues and cost data.
    • 9)Develop financial knowledge and accountability in division leadership. Communicate financial performance to team members.
  • Evaluates or develops programs to improve the Advocate Experience for patients and their families.
    • 1)Provide leadership to ensure an exceptional patient experience, including: a) modeling and holding others accountable for Standards of Behavior and Safety Behaviors; b) rounding for patient outcomes; c) encouraging creative interventions to improve the patient experience; d) counseling leaders whose areas are not achieving intended results for patient satisfaction.
    • 2)Address patient, visitor, physician and staff complaints/concerns and mentor division leadership and team members in service recovery interventions.

Education/Experience Required:
  • Masters Degree Req'd • Bachelors Degree Req'd (Either the Bachelors or Masters Degree must be in Nursing) • 5yrs health care mgmt experience • Masters Degree Req'd • Bachelors Degree Req'd (Either the Bachelors or Masters Degree must be in Nursing) • 5yrs health care mgmt experience CERTIFICATION (License, CPA) Nationally recognized certification. - Current RN license in the State of Illinois.
