Position Summary

The R&D Machine Controls Engineer is responsible for designing and developing machine controls for new and innovative automated material handling equipment and systems. This includes development of concepts, algorithms and drawings for material handling machine. The Machine Controls Engineer will work as part of a development team including mechanical and electrical engineers, to design and develop complete mechatronic prototypes and systems. As such, they will possess knowledge and provide direction on the overall control system architecture, network design, electrical design and power distribution. The Machine Controls will be directly responsible for writing the machine control code (PLC, IPC) and developing electrical drawings. The Machine Controls Engineer will work within the company’s New Product Development process to define requirements, write specifications, develop engineering estimates and documentation as required to support risk analysis, test reports, equipment certifications, commissioning procedures, troubleshooting and training. The Machine Controls Engineer will provide support to production and deployment resources to insure a proper transition of new products from prototype to production.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate leadership in Aegis’ Mission, Vision and Core Values.
  • Research & evaluate new electrical control devices & technologies.
  • Responsible for specifying electrical hardware and control devices based on the application requirements. This includes PLC hardware components and IO modules, servo and VFD controllers and field IO devices.
  • Must be familiar with application of various distributed controls solutions using commercially accepted IO networks such as Ethernet IP, ProfiNet, Sercos and IO link.
  • Work as team lead for the design of complete controls solutions for complex automated systems.
  • Apply kinematic equations of motion to develop material handling algorithms and timing parameters for controls.
  • Develop and implement machine control software based on Rockwell, Schneider, Siemens and/or other industrial control platforms.
  • Responsible for the electrical design of control panels for research and development projects using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Develop detailed documentation for the transition of R&D products to production and deployment groups.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of customers’ operations and specifications.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with R&D team members to ensure all aspects of project goals are achieved.
  • Must be a detailed self-starter able to design and develop next generation products with minimal guidance.
  • Understand complex systems and processes in high-level of detail.
  • Ability to work against deadlines; focus and perform work accurately while within budget and schedule.
  • Ability to lead and teach less experienced engineers by both instruction and role modelling.
  • Willingness to travel (less than 25%)
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with industrial automation
  • Expert knowledge of Rockwell, Schneider, or Siemens industrial control products
  • Experience with troubleshooting 460 VAC and 24 VDC control systems using instruments such as multi-meters and oscilloscopes.
  • Knowledge of LEAN and/or AGILE practices is a plus.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical
