The Senior Director, Commercial, will lead the US Utilities’ efforts to provide reliable energy at the lowest cost reasonably possible, as we transform our portfolio to the low carbon energy future. As part of the leadership team reporting to the US Utilities Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Director, Commercial will work closely with leaders in Generation, T&D, Finance, Regulatory and the US Utilities President to drive short-term and long-term strategies to optimize customer value now and into the future. The Senior Director, Commercial, will lead and structure the organization managing commercial activities and resource planning. The team will include the following functions – power and fuel purchases and hedging, MISO market dispatch, load forecasting, Integrated Resource Planning, project development and procurement related to the transition of the AES Indiana fleet, and market modelling and analytics. Key responsibilities include: Development and execution of a commercial strategy to optimize customer value and reliability in the short, medium and long-term Include a “merchant mindset” as we consider the costs and value of our existing generation fleet and the transition to transformative technologies Identification of customer value opportunities associated with portfolio planning, portfolio management, asset optimization, greenfield/brownfield development and repowering, as a part of our strategy to deliver our customers safe, reliable and sustainable energy solutions [Procurement of renewables and transformative technologies consistent with the lowest cost portfolio to customers] Leadership of the Integrated Resource Planning analytics and preferred portfolio determination Communication with AES Executive and Senior Leadership for strategy approval and alignment Leadership in market and regulatory advocacy as we work with stakeholders to formulate energy policies consistent with transformative technologies, reliability and customer interests Compliance with risk policies and limits and applicable regulations Mentorship and development of next generation commercial leaders Leadership Skills and Competencies The Senior Director, Commercial will be an effective team player who understands how to drive change in an organization by trusting and leveraging other stakeholders to deliver on their responsibilities. Considering the state of energy markets and pace of change in the industry, the individual must be willing to advocate for change and face internal challenges to drive commercial opportunities. Commercial Leadership This individual will possess a proven track record in driving revenue growth and delivering variable margin in the power sector. He/she will have a firm grasp of the current business model and a willingness to take an analytically supported view of how that business model may evolve. The candidate will have proven skills in building a high performance commercial culture that delivers results while focusing on strong partner relationships and team/individual development. He/she will be data and metrics-driven and consistently drive to become the industry benchmark. The successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to anticipate and understand evolving commercial trends and take steps to refocus business activities accordingly. He/she generates new profit-making initiatives while applying disciplined risk and value creation criteria. Strategic Orientation The ideal candidate will be adept at solving problems and evaluating amongst a wide range of options. He/she brings an innovative approach to business opportunities, anticipating problems before they arise and challenging complacency and the way things have always been done. Further, he/she will maintain organizational focus on driving value optimization in existing assets while working with leadership to craft long-term business strategies for new opportunities. This individual will possess the ability to arbitrate differences of opinion among staff and external stakeholders by creatively establishing common ground and forging partnerships among previously disparate stakeholders. The individual will be capable of analyzing quickly and making strategic decisions in the face of uncertainty. Collaboration and Influencing The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work across functions and business groups as part of a senior management team. He/she will put broad business objectives before personal objectives and will be a team player with an open management style. While this individual will be encouraged to take bold actions needed to grow the business, the successful candidate will have a natural tendency to seek the input and buy-in of key executives throughout the organization in formulating such ideas and plans. He/she will bring people together across the region to achieve results as a team and share best practices. He/she will have proven capabilities working successfully in a matrix environment. Personal Characteristics The successful candidate will offer an uncompromising level of integrity and code of ethics. He/she will also have the ability to work in unstructured environments where good judgment and entrepreneurial spirit are required to leverage internal organizational resources, while working within the requirements of the applicable regulatory environment. He/she will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a proactive approach with strong customer service orientation.
