Reporting to the Manager of CFAES Wooster Greenhouse Operations, the Assistant Manager assists with the management of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Wooster Campus Greenhouse complex with an emphasis on educational horticulture greenhouse operations to meet objectives for teaching, outreach and research.
Provides collaborative professional service as part of the greenhouse operations team to assist CFAES faculty staff and students.
Serves as the primary contact and manages operations for the overall ATI greenhouse range on the CFAES Wooster campus, supporting academic programs and the ATI greenhouse practicum by supervising student experiences that culminate with seasonal plant sales.
Monitors the operation of facilities and equipment and performs ongoing programming and updating of greenhouse computer control systems.
Advises on design and construction of equipment for greenhouse production teaching in cooperation with corresponding faculty and staff. Assists with general operations, inventory, business, and procurement functions per university guidelines. Assists Greenhouse Manager with prioritization, assignment and recording of ATI greenhouse space and general inventory use for fee collection purposes, follows protocols to successfully accomplish objectives and ensure all federal and university regulations and guidelines are met.
Administers an Integrated Pest Management driven pest and disease control strategy including, but not limited to, pesticide applications for pest and pathogen control/prevention and communicates pesticide reentry information to faculty staff and students.
Implements strict sanitation practices and maintains/organizes the greenhouse complex to the highest professional standard. Works with fellow Wooster campus greenhouse assistant managers for greenhouse related needs, maintains detailed operations and greenhouse records of purchases, inventories, student employees, and production crop schedules and rotations.
Assists management team to ensure the safe work environment of the unit at all times. Hires, schedules, trains and supervises student greenhouse employees. Advises faculty, staff, students and student employees on materials needed and proper greenhouse techniques.
Plans, prioritizes, organizes, and executes daily work plans, communicates professionally and collaborates in decision-making, attends meetings, assists with educational programs and interacts with the public both informally and during campus events. Fosters diversity and inclusion and serves as a professional role model to students.
Operates lifts, electric carts, soil mixers, hand and power tools and other specialized greenhouse equipment to accomplish objectives. Ability to move 50-80 pound bales of growing media and work in inclement weather conditions. Must be able to work both independently and as part of our team. May need to report to work outside of normal business hours on weekends or holidays. Other duties as assigned.
