Job Description:
Direct and work with others to maintain LSU grounds. Ability to operate hand and power equipment. Some plant ID knowledge, chemical application. Pruning, equipment maintenance, raking, litter pickup. Working in adverse weather, overtime work, and weekend work. Ability to lift 501bs. Equipment may include: riding and push mower, string trimmer, blower, back pack blower and sprayer, tractor, ZTR, hedger, edger, chain saw. Storm debris cleanup, drain cleaning, laying sod, weed removal, mulching, digging, grading. cleaning signs and other items, painting, pressure washing, planting, etc.
Job Responsibilities:
60%- Direct others and/or in the operation of power riding mower (25HP or less), trimmer, edger, blower, hedger, etc. to maintain grounds, sidewalks, plazas, building entrances, canals, building perimeters, tree perimeters, road sides, etc. in a neat, clean, and safe condition. Support arboriculture service with labor to chip limbs, haul debris, perform light chain saw work, pruning, chemical spraying, etc.
20%- Direct others and/or apply chemicals to control weeds, control pests, fertilize and amend soils, apply mulch to beds and under tree canopies, perform weed removal, assist with ornamental and flower planting, litter removal, litter container servicing for cleanliness, cigarette butt removal, etc. Maintain interior plants to include watering, pruning, fertilizing, relocation, rotating, cleaning, treatment for disease and insects. Direct others and/or assist with irrigation work, digging, grading, drain basin cleaning, concrete repair labor as needed.
10%- Direct others and/or perform inspections on mobile equipment and vehicles. Change blades and tires as necessary on mowers, keep some records. Assist with preventative maintenance as required. Work special events (athletic, fraternity, public, etc.) to assist with litter control and related cleanup.
5%- Fills in for a Horticulture Attendant Superintendent to direct the activity of 2 or more crews of Horticulture Attendants, Mobile Equipment Operators and others in assigned tasks.
5%- Perform related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Three years of experience in any of the following: farming, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, or grounds keeping.

SUBSTITUTIONS:
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty is in any of the following fields: botany, agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, agronomy, forestry, turf management, landscape management or landscape architecture.

Vocational training in the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs will substitute for the required experience on a month for month basis.

NOTE:
Possession of a commercial pesticide application certificate may be required for some vacancies.

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Due to the nature of this position and/or position responsibilities this position shall be subject to drug/alcohol testing in accordance with University Policy Statement 67.
In accordance with PS-18 this position maybe required to report or stay on campus in the event of emergency or closure. Ability to work in all weather conditions. Overtime and Weekend Work. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Climb ladders. Ability to stoop, kneel, and bend for extended periods. Due to the position's physical requirements, a pre-employment physical examination will be required per FASOP: HR-04.
