Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission is Hiring a Stream Habitat Restoration Biologist Near Glennallen, AK

Position: Stream Habitat Restoration Biologist

Location: Glennallen, Alaska

Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 DOE

Schedule: 40 Hours Per Week

Reports To: Executive Director

SUMMARY

The Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission (AITRC) is seeking a self-motivated individual to fill the position of Stream Habitat Restoration Biologist, in the Ahtna Territory of southcentral Alaska. The incumbent will meet with the Ahtna tribes to gather information on environmental areas of concern, rank priority fish passage projects, plan and carry out fieldwork, and apply for implementation funding. Trainings will be attended with partner organizations to guarantee synchronized protocols, data, and ranking criteria.

RESPONSIBILIES INCLUDE:

· Meet with local tribes to gather information, record, and analyze data

· Conduct site visits/field work at areas of concern

· Prioritize and rank potential restoration projects

· Apply for funding through grant opportunities to implement restoration projects

· Ensure that quality standards are met

· Writing technical reports summarizing project findings and communicate results to scientific peers, tribal organizations, various advisory committees, and members of the public

· Compiling and analyzing research data and presenting it to multiple audiences, including Tribal entities, scientific groups, the general public, and at regulatory meetings

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

· Ecological Knowledge: Strong understanding of landscape ecology, stream ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, fishery biology, and watershed management

· Project Management: Skills in managing restoration projects including methods, protocols, budgeting, and logistics

· Grant and Report Writing: Strong grant and report writing skills are essential to this position

· Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting processes related to water quality and habitat restoration

· Working knowledge of regional fish species, their natural history, and characteristics, including habitat requirements

· Ability to set goals and priorities, monitor progress, and adjust resources to accomplish project objectives

· Knowledge of statistical approaches, data analysis, evaluation, intermediate field/laboratory procedures, research design, and scientific documentation

· Ability to work independently as well as part of a professional team

· Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

· Ability to work at remote field sites in bear country, operate all-terrain vehicles, firearms, and other field equipment appropriately and safely

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or similar, and 3 years of experience working in stream restoration, fisheries biology, habitat, or management, or;
  • A master's degree in a pertaining field with a minimum of 1 year experience working in stream restoration, fisheries biology, habitat, or management

PREFERED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in stream restoration regarding culvert assessment and improvement
  • Strong report and grant writing skills
  • Experience in field data collection, habitat assessment, species identification, and ecological monitoring
  • Hands-on experience with stream or wetland restoration projects, including planning and implementation
  • Experience with public speaking and working with tribes

· Experience coordinating and leading a field crew

  • Knowledge of state and federal wildlife management strategies, statutes, regulations, policies, procedures, issues, and research objectives within the Ahtna traditional territory is preferred
