As an Elementary School Teacher Aide for Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) you will be responsible for working closely with teachers in a specialized classroom with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, and multi-disabled. ASD is committed to meeting our students where they are. The right candidate for this job will have a passion for working with students and colleagues to ensure all students receive a world-class education.

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in the lives of our students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB and ASD. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, a positive attitude, agility, and professional maturity.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess assign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL PLUS upon employment according to the AIDB evaluation system.
  • Must provide documentation of sign language proficiency evaluation (SCPI available through AIDB).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
  • A sign language proficiency evaluation of INTERMEDIATE upon employment.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must complete a Foundations in Deaf/Hard of Hearing E-Learning course within the first twelve (12) months of employment.
  • Must possess assign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL PLUS upon employment.
  • Must possess INTERMEDIATE within the first thirty-six (36) months of employment.
MANDATORY ANNUAL TRAINING:
  • Medication Training
  • Behavior Management certification
  • CPR – every 2 years
  • Blood Borne Pathogens
  • Using an AED
  • Mandatory Reporting – DHR
  • Policy and Procedure Review
  • Erin’s Law
  • Jason Flatt Act
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Complete duties for the program as assigned by teachers, director, and principal.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member assisting teachers, directors, and secretaries with instructional and limited clerical duties in the elementary department.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops provided (including LSLP workshops).
  • Assist with maintenance of items in departments which may include general student records, work orders, assessments, Student ID’s, birth certificates, purchases, trip processing, Hearing Aids, Cochlear Implants, etc.
  • Work one-on-one with students as needed.
  • Deal with the needs of students in the LSLP program grades as requested by the director or teacher(s).
  • Assist with special programs, which may include but not be limited to, Spoken Language, Art, PE, Academics, Daily Living Skills, Etiquette, etc.
  • Deal with emergency situations in a calm and logical manner.
  • Use tact and friendliness with students, parents, staff, and all other non-staff personnel in a constant public relations program.
  • Dispense medications as instructed by nursing staff (attend annual medication training).
  • Transport and chaperone students on field trips, to and from area locations, etc.
  • Adhere to AIDB Communication Policy as it applies to the LSLP and sign when it is necessary.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Assist with extracurricular activities, especially those assigned to the department.
  • Perform lunch duty in the office and cafeteria as needed.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB

SALARY: $15.02-$17.40 per hour Scale CI Rank 27 (High School/GED)
$15.81-$18.45 per hour Scale CI Rank 29 (30 semester hours) in related field
$17.06 $19.97 per hour Scale CI Rank 32 (60 Semester Hours only) in related field
187 Days
Direct deposit is required.
This is an exempt position, and is not subject to overtime or compensatory provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
