Job Title – Assistant Director of Operations for Transportation

Supervisor: Executive Director of Operations

Job Goals:

  • To assist with the provision of excellent transportation services for Jefferson County students.
  • To assist with the effective management of school system vehicles, fiscal and material resources, and transportation personnel

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of experience in transportation services.
  • Three (3) years of experience in supervision of personnel.
  • Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) with P/S endorsement and commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A.
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage assigned personnel.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule when necessary.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system, its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Monitors buses and observes routes during the school year to ensure drivers are following county and state policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the establishment and development of new routes or route additions using the route tracking computer program.
  • Follows bus drivers on their assigned routes to monitor the safety of routes, stops and turnarounds periodically during the school year.
  • Takes an active role in preventing and solving disciplinary problems on school buses.
  • Assists with the development of all transportation vehicle specifications for bids in accordance with state guidelines.
  • Assists with responsibilities for fiscal management and inventory control for transportation services and operations in accordance with school system financial procedures.
  • Assists with obtaining information needed to report accidents involving Board-owned vehicles.
  • Substitutes as Transportation Director when needed.
  • Coordinates with the Exceptional Education department regarding Transportation needs for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinates the use of transportation, routing, GPS tracking software and applicable technology.
  • Oversees operation of transportation shop.
  • Engages in professional growth, ongoing training, and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  • Coordinates with the principal concerning the hiring of bus drivers, bus aides, and field trip transportation needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state and federal law.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job-related duties assigned by Supervisor(s).

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
