Job Title: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To serve as an instructional and administrative leader of the school, to work with staff, students and community to ensure a high quality educational program, and to formulate and accomplish the school’s mission.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher with a major in educational administration.
  • Valid Alabama administrator certificate.
  • Three (3) years successful experience as a classroom teacher.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of principals and practices of modern education and ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively.
  • Ability to plan and supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, including, but not limited to, students, faculty, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of school law, Board policies, and school system regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill in recruitment, selection, induction and assignment of personnel.
  • Successful previous experience in maintaining effective discipline.
  • Ability to plan and conduct faculty meetings.
  • Physical mobility, dexterity, strength and visual acuity to meet student needs, deal with student problems and address building maintenance problems and school ground monitoring activities.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use and facilitate the use of technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Assists in providing effective leadership in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the instructional program.
  • Assists in interpreting and enforcing local, state and federal policies, regulations and laws.
  • Assists the principal in the personnel function (recruitment, orientation, training, supervision, evaluation, mentoring, etc.)
  • Assists the principal in securing, maintaining and managing material resources.
  • Assists in improving student attendance.
  • Assists with scheduling and assigning students for instruction.
  • Assists with extracurricular activities at the level assigned.
  • Assists with the supervision of classroom instruction.
  • Assists with the distribution and accounting of textbooks, technology equipment, and instructional supplies.
  • Models appropriate and innovative use of technology for faculty, staff and students.
  • Facilitates and monitors the integration of technology in the classroom.
  • Assists with curriculum development and other related matters.
  • Prepares reports, presentations, publications, or rosters as assigned.
  • Assists with inspection of the physical plant and grounds and reports maintenance/custodial needs.
  • Attends meetings, trainings, seminars, and workshops as required.
  • Attends and assists with supervision of school system activities, events, ceremonies, and conferences as needed.
  • Assists with procedures related to the health and safety of staff and students.
  • Assumes overall responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
  • Is on call when necessary to provide proper building security and building maintenance, and to handle emergency situations.
  • Provides a quick response to any emergency involving students, staff, or the school facility.
  • Maintains high visibility within all areas of the facility.
  • Assists in monitoring the orderly movement and safety of transportation services on school grounds.
  • Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  • Adheres to state statutes and system policies relating to accounting to ensure judicious management of school funds.
  • Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Keeps principal informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Works cooperatively and productively with supervisor(s) and other system staff to ensure the system’s vision, goals and strategies are implemented and providing all pertinent data to all appropriate personnel within the designated time frame.
  • Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • Serves on school system committees, tasks forces, and representatives groups as required.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger dexterity, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, and crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull carry and/or move to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School’s District Salary Schedule.
