Alabama State Department of Education is Hiring a CNP Worker/Custodian (Possible) Near Tuscumbia, AL

Reports To: CNP Director/Principal

Salary: Based on custodian salary schedule for 235 days.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Sufficient education to have basic skills in reading, writing, and math is required; a high school diploma or GED equivalent is desirable.
  • Served as a child nutrition program substitute or have considerable paid or volunteer experience.
  • Physical abilities includes manual dexterity to shred, chop, assemble, and mix foods. Stamina to stand and walk on hard flooring for long periods of time, bend, stoop, lift, carry and reach over head. Ability to withstand a wide range of temperatures and work with chemical cleaning agents. Having strength to lift and carry food items or objects weighing up to forty (40) pounds and to perform any assigned task dictated by the physical layout of the cafeteria facility.
  • Must complete a criminal background check through the Alabama State Department of Education at your own expense.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Duties and Responsibilities for Child Nutrition Program Worker:

The following is an outline of the job function to be performed by a Child Nutrition Program Worker. Tasks required to carry out each job function are provided and are considered a part of the job description.

  • Participate in job related training and professional growth activities.
    • Develops and applies knowledge and/or skills obtained from training under the supervision of the manager and CNP central office staff.
    • Follow manager’s instruction as to method and procedures to use in performing tasks.
    • Relates training to personal sanitation/health and job responsibilities.
    • Participate in job-related professional activities; attendance at Tuscumbia City Schools CNP Professional Development Days is expected.
  • Practice procedures in food preparation, use and care of equipment, and personal habits to assure that system, county, and state sanitation standards are met.
    • Receives, stores, prepares, and serves food according to Health Department and USDA standards.
    • Accept work assignments for the cleaning of work areas, utensils, equipment and the cafeteria and dining facility.
    • Follows established procedures to maintain insect and rodent control systems; reports any evidence of infestation to manager.
    • Follows system policies on sanitation, personal grooming and dress.
  • Follows standards of safety in preparing, storing, and serving food.
    • Operates and cleans equipment using caution and safe procedures.
    • Uses, cleans, and stores potentially dangerous equipment items according to safe procedure, i.e. knives, slicers, choppers, food processors, mixers, steamers, etc.
    • Operates fire extinguishers, if needed.
    • Reports accidents and potential safety hazards to the manager.
    • Practices grooming habits as determined by system dress standards and general policies that relate to food and personal safety (proper shoes, hair restraints, no jewelry, etc.).
  • Follows the Child Nutrition Program manager’s assignments and instructions in producing and serving food and in facility maintenance.
    • Uses objective and subjective methods to evaluate food quality.
    • Measures and/or weighs ingredients correctly.
    • Follows standardized recipes according to instruction.
    • Uses correct utensils for preparation and serving.
    • Follows assigned work schedule.
    • Assembles food and other supplies necessary to prepare recipes.
    • Uses efficient work techniques and completes assigned tasks on schedule.
    • Maintains equipment and work areas used in a clean and orderly condition.
    • Provide correct records of food usage/leftovers for production records.
  • Follows the Child Nutrition Program manager’s instructions in portioning, garnishing, and serving meals.
    • Serves correct portions of food in appropriate dishes with garnishes in an attractive manner.
    • Follows standards to check temperature of food and equipment; maintains potentially hazardous foods at proper temperature.
    • Follows USDA meal pattern requirements in serving student meals.
    • Keeps serving area clean, orderly, and supplied with menu items offered.
  • Participates in implementing promotion of special school and community activities consistent with Board policy.
    • Recognizes the importance and role of special activities as a public relations tool.
    • Participate in the preparation and service of special meal functions if assigned.
  • Maintains required forms and records as assigned by managers.
    • Assists with inventories, if assigned.
    • Accurately completes required forms, i.e. production records, if assigned.
    • Cashiers and assists with counting money, if assigned.
    • Performs other clerical duties related to program, if assigned.
  • Follows system procedures in personnel matters including grievance, leave, etc.
    • Follows school system policies and regulations related to classified personnel.
    • Confers with manager and CNP director/principal regarding job related problems; follows lines of communication within the school and school system in resolving grievance or problem situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work cooperatively with the school and the community.
    • Relates and communicates positively with students, co-workers, school staff, parents, and the public.
    • Discusses job related problems and/or complaints with the appropriate supervisors/administrators and not in the community.
  • Participates in implementing cost containment measures while maintaining quality.
    • Utilize work simplification techniques.
    • Efficiently uses time, food, equipment, and supplies with minimum waste.
    • Produces satisfactory work on assigned job tasks in a reasonable time.
    • Performs assigned tasks, assists others with cleaning or preparation when assigned tasks are completed ahead of schedule.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities for Custodian:

  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
  • Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are set for building egress and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
  • Raises the United States flag at or before 8:00 a.m. on each school day, and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m.
  • Sweeps or vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture or as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when their condition requires it.
  • Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
  • Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year, and more frequently if necessary.
  • Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
  • Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles and filters as needed.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
  • Cleans all chalkboards, whiteboards and instructional writing surfaces at least once a day or as specified or as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Makes such minor building/furniture repairs as necessary.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the head custodian or principal.
  • Maintains on a regular schedule all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing. (Subject to school assignment.)
  • Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property.
  • Remains on the school premises during work hours.
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each school day as designated by the principal, and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies and equipment on hand and requisitions such needed replacements form the principal or head custodian.
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  • Completes all daily reports, checklists and addressing the upkeep of the facility.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
