DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited educational institution.
  • Valid Alabama certification in Educational Leadership and Supervision.
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of laws, rules, policies and procedures relating to career technical education. Knowledge of research, current trends and best practices in career technical education. Ability to use data analysis and evaluation techniques. Ability to design and evaluate curriculum services for career technical education. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

JOB GOAL

To develop, implement and administer a comprehensive, modern curriculum in the both the elementary and secondary levels of education. Including Core Curriculum, Career Tech, Textbooks, and Testing.

SUPERVISES:

Assigned Personnel

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with and in support of system goals and priorities.
  • Assists in the formulation of a philosophy and objectives for the instructional program.
  • Work with and direct personnel assigned to the area of curriculum and instruction.
  • Coordinates elementary and secondary education programs, technical education,

and other curricular programs.

  • Formulates and recommends to the Superintendent, in coordination with supervisory staff, administrators and teachers, curriculum development activities.
  • Keeps abreast of development in curriculum and instruction, and provides leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the district’s educational program.
  • Coordinates all Student Assessment Program activities for the school system.
  • Coordinates guidance/testing, accreditation, resource and grant development.
  • Conducts training for Building Test Coordinators, and monitors Student Assessment program to maintain strict test security before, during, and after each testing session.
  • Receives and accounts for all testing materials in the system.
  • Works with System Technology Coordinator on applicable student assessment, curriculum and instructional programs and guidelines.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the student textbook program and other educational materials.
  • Supervise the career technical program to ensure the State Course of Study requirements are met.
  • Evaluate the total career technical program to achieve the established goals of providing the opportunity for people to prepare for gainful employment.
  • Coordinate the program evaluation process for the total career technical program.
  • Recommend revisions in the career technical program to meet changing job trends and needs.
  • Follow federal and state laws and School Board policies.
  • Develop the department budget and monitor its implementation as required.
  • Assist in obtaining state and federal funds for career technical education programs.
  • Recommend equipment purchase, repair, and disposal for all career technical programs.
  • Select, order, maintain and inventory equipment, materials and software for the career technical program.
  • Interact with parents, outside agencies, businesses and the community to enhance the understanding of system initiatives, and priorities and to elicit support.
  • Maintain a close working relationship and coordinate activities with administrators of the elementary, middle, and high schools.
  • Maintain working relationships with colleagues, county and state agencies, school administration, teachers, students and others who affect the successful implementation of career technical education programs.
  • Assist in the interpretation of programs, philosophy and policies of the system to staff, students, parents and the community.
  • Utilize appropriate strategies and problem solving skills to make decisions regarding planning, utilization of funds, delivery of services and evaluation of services provided.
  • Assist in implementing the system’s goals and strategic commitment.
  • Work closely with system and school staff to support school improvement initiatives and processes.
  • Use appropriate styles and methods in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.
  • Assist in the recruitment and screening of career technical teachers.
  • Supervise assigned personnel, provide assistance, conduct annual performance appraisals and make recommendations for appropriate employment actions.
  • Supervise and evaluate all instructional personnel in career technical programs.
  • Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
  • Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere to professional standards at all times.
  • Represent the system in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain membership in and participate in the affairs of professional societies devoted to the advancement of career technical education.
  • Serve on system, state or community councils or committees as assigned or appropriate.
  • Keep informed and disseminate information about current research, trends and best practices in areas of responsibility.
  • Maintain expertise in assigned area.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all pertinent rules and regulations affecting career technical education.
  • Arrange and direct inservice education for the career technical staff of the school system.
  • Design, coordinate and provide inservice activities based on identified needs.
  • Attend training sessions, conferences and workshops as assigned or appropriate to keep abreast of current practices, programs and legal issues.
  • Participate in career technical education and other conferences, workshops, and inservice meetings designed to provide professional skills and competencies.
  • May be required to work beyond the 40-hour work week.

  • Essential Performance Responsibilities

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan.

Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
