Job Title: HEAD COACH

Supervised by/Reports to: Principal/Athletic Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Job Goals:

  • To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, mental attitudes, strategy and physical training necessary to achieve individual and team success.
  • To provide leadership for students and staff in the development of moral values, good sportsmanship and fair play, the development of pride of accomplishment, self-discipline and self-confidence.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Alabama teacher certificate.
  • Previous coaching experience and experience in the sport to be coached, preferred.
  • Current employment in the school system.
  • Knowledge of Board’s athletics policies and procedures, school rules, state and/or regional athletic association rules.
  • Knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Knowledge of first aid and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of coaching principles and knowledge of the assigned sport.
  • Ability to evaluate the performance of assistant coaches and determine their effectiveness.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
  • Serves as a role model and works toward the development of good character and desirable attitudes among students.
  • Ensures fair and impartial treatment of all student athletes.
  • Displays a broad technical competence in the area of coaching.
  • Demonstrates a strong desire toward winning and in accomplishing the work necessary for this end.
  • Works with the principals, other coaches, athletes in other sports, faculty, and staff in establishing and maintaining good sportsmanship standards in the school.
  • Administers the designated sport for the school.
  • Makes recommendations to principals and the personnel department in the selection and assignment of assistant coaches.
  • Ensures that all rules and regulations of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, and any Board regulations regarding athletics are enforced.
  • Determines the eligibility of student athletes and ensures completion of forms, reports, or other documentation to complete this task.
  • Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
  • Coordinates with the principal and athletic director to formulate budgets and submits them to the principal for approval; operates within the established budget for the sport.
  • Assists in processing a proper insurance plan for athletes.
  • Works with the principals, assistant coaches and boosters in improving and maintaining existing facilities.
  • Delegates specific duties to assistant coaches and supervises the implementation of program plans.
  • Ensures proper professional and ethical behavior from all assistant coaches at all times.
  • Approves and submits for final approval the purchases of all equipment and uniforms bought for the sport and ensures proper purchasing procedures.
  • Designs conferences, clinics and meetings to develop staff abilities and skills.
  • Approves all sales and advertising campaigns to benefit the sport.
  • Ensures to the maximum extent possible, the safety and well-being of all participants in the athletic program.
  • Maintains discipline, adjust grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Establishes schedules for practices, games, transportation, tournaments and special events according to school and system guidelines.
  • Coordinates the use of practice areas, competition areas, training facilities and meeting spaces with principal and other school system personnel.
  • Gives attention to student athletes’ grades, school conduct and overall well-being.
  • Reports athletic injuries according to Board policy and school procedures.
  • Assists athletes in their post-secondary education selections.
  • Maintains inventory records and is accountable for all equipment for the sport; arranges for issuing, storing, reconditioning, and properly discarding equipment.
  • Attends all practices, games, meetings and events connected with the sport; supervises appropriate travel arrangements and provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  • Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning each athlete’s physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  • Coordinates with custodians or designated school personnel to ensure building and facility security during and after practices, games, events, and activities.
  • Promotes the sport through appropriate recruiting and publicity activities.
  • Directs and supervises volunteers, student assistants, managers, and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline, delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, follows system and school rules for student conduct and contacts parents when a student is dismissed from a sport.
  • Initiates and implements appropriate programs and policies concerning student injuries, medical attention and handling emergencies.
  • Promotes safety and student well-being in schedules for practices, events, games, and activities.
  • Monitors all facilities associated with the sport (equipment rooms, weight rooms, coaches’ offices, locker rooms, etc.) for authorized uses and access.
  • Models and maintains high ethical standards.
  • Keeps principal informed of potential problems or unusual events.
  • Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Serves on school/system committees as required or appropriate.
  • Exhibits interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system and effectively supervises and monitors others in the care, maintenance, and use of tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
  • Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Performs any other job-related duties as assigned by the principal or Athletic Director.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use hands to finger, to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls. The employee is frequently required to talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, bend, stoop, squat, crouch and kneel. The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Salary: Salary to be established by The Limestone County School’s District Salary Schedule.

Terms of Employment: 187 plus number of supplemental days
