READING COACH

JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.

(2) Minimum of nine (9) graduate level semester hours of college credit in reading.

(3) Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of students in the age group assigned. Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum. Knowledge of current educational research. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles. Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents and others. Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness. Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results and prescribe actions for improvement. Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators and others.

JOB GOAL

To provide opportunities for all students to achieve literacy by the completion of the third grade.

SUPERVISES:

N/A

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • (1) Develop a comprehensive plan to assist/teach struggling readers.
  • (2) Provide modeling lessons as coaching tests to assist teachers as they work with struggling readers.
  • (3) Participate, on a continuous basis, in professional development reading activities.
  • (4) Administer, train, and interpret assessment data for appropriate personnel.
  • (5) Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with and in support of system goals and priorities.
  • (6) Assist in implementing the system’s goals and strategic commitment.
  • (7) Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.
  • (8) Communicate, in understandable terms, individual student progress knowledgeably and responsibly to the student, parents, and professional colleagues who need access to the information.
  • (9) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum content.
  • (10) Monitor learning activities, providing feedback, and reinforcement to students.
  • (11) Provide quality work for students which is focused on meaningful, relevant, and engaging learning experiences.
  • (12) Recognize overt indicators of student distress of abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral, or reporting actions.
  • (13) Access student abilities and modify the program of instruction accordingly.
  • (14) Responsible for acquiring professional development opportunities, in the area of reading, for appropriate personnel.
  • (15) Responsible for providing information and/or assistance in managing flexible reading groups.

(16) Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the System’s approved compensation plan.

Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the System.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
