PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Physical Education Teacher

SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.

JOB GOAL: To develop in each student an awareness of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess valid Alabama’s Teacher Certification.
  • Popper endorsement in physical education.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualification as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach knowledge and skill in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other physical education teacher in planning a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Teach physical education classes for handicapped pupils, as well as students in the regular program.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
  • Control assigned district-owed physical education equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilize appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested todo so under reasonable circumstances.
  • Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Assist the administration with and/or supervise entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  • In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and student outcomes.
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional / learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  • In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
  • Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  • Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  • Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, and inservice and staff development activities as required or assigned.
  • Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and general conducive to learning.
  • Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Good knowledge of school’s program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Excellent human relations skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
  • If teaching physical education and unless assigned full time as health or classroom driver education teacher, must possess sufficient strength, dexterity, endurance, agility and skill to carry out the program of studies for the activities to which assigned.
  • If a physical education teacher, some assignments may be based on gender to ensure proper behavior in locker rooms and dressing areas.
  • If a physical education teacher, some assignments may require sufficient athletic skills to demonstrate and perform appropriate athletic techniques at both the beginning and advanced levels.
  • If a physical education teacher, some assignments may require working outdoors in conditions which are moderately comfortable and require adaptation of clothes and dress to the conditions or the use of “sun blockers”.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
