HOUSTON COUNTY SCHOOLS

JOB TITLE: Secondary Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • Certification in Educational Leadership, School Principal or Professional School Principal, or Administration and Supervision.
  • Five years of successful experience as a teacher or in school administration in public education.
  • Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations.

FLSA: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Superintendent/Designee

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages and administers the development, implementation, and assessment of the instructional program at the assigned school.
  • Uses current research, performance data, and feedback from students, teachers, parents, and the community to make decisions related to improvement of instruction and student performance.
  • Coordinates program planning with system instructional staff.
  • Manages the selection of textbooks, materials, and equipment.
  • Manages and administers the testing program for the school.
  • Directs the development of the master schedule and assigns teachers according to identified needs.
  • Facilitates the horizontal and vertical articulation of curriculum within the school, as well as between the school and its feeder system.
  • Interviews and selects qualified personnel to be recommended for employment.
  • Supervises assigned personnel, conducts annual performance appraisals, and makes recommendations for the appropriate employment action.
  • Establishes job assignments for school-site administrators, teachers, and support personnel for special projects.
  • Develops and administers duty rosters for certified and non-certified staff as required.
  • Supervises the operation and management of all activities and functions at the assigned school.
  • Develops positive school/community relations and acts as a liaison between the school and the community.
  • Coordinates plant safety and facility inspections.
  • Coordinates all maintenance functions.
  • Coordinates and supervises transportation services.
  • Manages and supervises the school’s financial resources including the preparation and disbursement of the school budget and internal accounts, and fixed assets.
  • Establishes and manages student accounting and attendance procedures at the assigned school.
  • Supervises the school food service program at the assigned school including the free and reduced-price food service program requirements.
  • Communicates, through the proper channels, to keep the Superintendent informed of impending problems or events of unusual nature.
  • Implements School Board policy, state statutes, and federal regulations.
  • Supervises the preparation and maintenance of accurate and timely reports and records.
  • Establishes guidelines for proper student conduct and implement disciplinary procedures and policies that ensure a safe and orderly environment.
  • Establishes procedures to be used in the event of school crises and/or civil disobedience and provides leadership in the event of such happenings.
  • Coordinates the supervision and management of all extracurricular and athletic programs.
  • Attends school-related activities and events.
  • Manages and administers professional development through job-embedded training, in-service and other activities.
  • Models and maintains high standards of professional conduct.
  • Provides leadership in the school improvement process and the implementation of the school improvement plan.
  • Establishes a vision and mission for the school in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to prepare and manage the school budget and allocated resources.
  • Ability to read, interpret and enforce the State Board of Education rules, Code of Ethics, School Board policies, and appropriate state and federal statutes.
  • Ability to use effective interview techniques, coaching procedures, and evaluation procedures.
  • Ability to use effective public speaking skills, interaction skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Skills in personnel management and supervision techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze and use data.
  • Knowledge of current educational trends and research.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the unique needs and characteristics of students.
  • Ability to use group dynamics in the context of cultural diversity.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan.
Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
