Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has a hiring preference for qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants pursuant to P.L. 93-638 Indian Self Determination Act.

Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs various echocardiographic tests and/or vascular ultrasound as assigned. Performs stress echocardiography as well as billing/clerical duties where assigned. The majority of tests are scheduled; emergent testing is occasionally required.

Responsibilities:

Echocardiography: Performs high quality, technically diagnostic echocardiograms including a qualitative and quantitative two dimensional, continuous, pulsed and color flow Doppler as well as M-mode examinations. Administers contrast as needed for better visualization of wall segments and performs bubble studies. Notifies the cardiologist of urgent conditions demonstrated on echo’s performed. Obtains diagnostic wall motion information in a timely fashion (generally less than 90 seconds) on both stress and dobutamine echocardiography. Prepares the patient for transesophageal echocardiography, educates them about the procedure and be sufficiently skilled with the equipment to assist the cardiologist in obtaining a high quality study.

Vascular Ultrasound: Performs diagnostically adequate examinations of various arteries and veins. Locates and records internal elements of the body such as vessels, organs and tissues; and displays their position and function. Identifies any anomaly indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition of the blood vessels from ultrasound imaging and simultaneous recordings of the Doppler.

Patient Education: Instructs patients in correct pretest preparation. Obtains signed consent for stress echocardiograms and transesophageal echocardiograms. Independently and thoroughly instructs patients on each test performed to assure compliance and to guarantee a good quality test.

Accommodates the patient’s condition by variations of technical factors; extends standard test methods; changes conventional methods to produce diagnostically acceptable results; develops new or revised procedures using standard techniques; or refines existing procedures.

Completes preliminary reports and submits in a timely fashion. Sterilizes equipment as required and notify the clinical supervisor of any mechanical problems. Provides care and patient education needed as described in the assigned unit’s policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

· Knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound equipment.

· Knowledge of venous and arterial anatomy and disease process.

· Knowledge of vascular examination protocols and patient preparation for evaluation.

· Knowledge of cardiac defibrillator and other medical electronics and stress testing equipment.

· Knowledge of the principles of growth and development.

· Skill in monitoring patient responses and operating defibrillator equipment.

· Skill in performing vascular and echocardiogram ultrasound testing procedures.

· Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

· Skill in assessing data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

Two (2) year allied health education program. Progressively responsible professional/exempt work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for allied health education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION

– Five (5) years of experience working in Echocardiography and/or Vascular Sonography.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION

Certification in Basic Life Support required.

Must be registered in both cardiac (RDCS or RCS) and vascular sonographer (RVT or RVS).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

· Work is performed primarily in the cardiovascular testing department. Some tests are performed in the intensive care unit, inpatient wards, ER or other clinics.

· The incumbent is exposed to patients throughout the hospital and, therefore can be exposed to communicable diseases.

· Exposure to blood borne pathogens increases the risk of transmission of infectious disease such as hepatitis B and AIDS.

· The occasional need to participate in the performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation exists with its attendant risks.
