Summary: Under close supervision, provides clerical and technical support to laboratory staff through reception, basic specimen processing, and laboratory organization. Also, provides phlebotomy services as required.
Responsibilities:
Provides phlebotomy services, including venipuncture.
Provides clerical and technical support to the laboratory of the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC). Answers incoming phone calls and routes callers to appropriate department or personnel.
Provides customer services to physicians, nurses, and others contacting the laboratory. Answers questions about laboratory processes, services available and basic technical issues.
Assists in specimen processing. Evaluates specimens for integrity, verifies correct labeling and paperwork, and resolves discrepancies with specimen documentation as they occur. Assists with processing incoming specimens. Distributes specimens to assigned areas.
Assists with microbiology set-ups of patient specimens and QC organisms, and rapid testing set-ups.
Assists with daily/weekly/monthly maintenance procedures of laboratory equipment
Assists in laboratory organization, records maintenance, reception, scheduling, and general duties to facilitate office administration. Assists with department projects.
Maintains department records and assures completeness of files. Updates, distributes and archives productivity reports.
Sends, receives and distributes lab results. Makes copies and scans and files electronic documents. Maintains, orders and stocks office and technical supplies.
Performs other duties as assigned.

· Knowledge of basic clinical processes and medical terminology.
· Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations.
· Knowledge of multi-line telephone systems operation.
· Skill in determining most appropriate site to obtain specimens.
· Skill in operating office and basic laboratory equipment.
· Skill in oral and written communication.
· Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
· Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory - One (1) year of laboratory specimen and collection techniques experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Phlebotomist (ASCP) OR Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR equivalent certification (as determined by a national credential certification agency).
