Summary:
This position is responsible for supporting effective educational programs, focusing on conservation, empathy, scientific studies, and inclusion of Alaska’s ecosystems, animals, and culture. Candidates will assist in the development and maintenance of education projects by upgrading the existing photo and video assets, including metadata coding, labeling, and organizing photo assets. This position will work closely with the Communications and Marketing team and the Small Fry online learning team to support their program deliverables that engage audiences and support learning. As a member of the Education team, this position also works closely with Exhibits and Interpretation teams to ensure photography and video assets are available to support a positive learning experience for our guests throughout the Center.

Education/Training Requirements:
This summer position is designed to provide a work experience opportunity for a student pursuing a master’s degree in a library and information science digital library and archives specialization, wildlife photography, or other related fields. Knowledge of marine science or relevant disciplines, such as science communication, education, or informal learning is preferred. Experience as an intern, teacher, or interpreter in an aquarium, museum, camp, or similar setting is ideal. However, candidates with other experience will be considered.

Essential Duties:
1. Reports to the Learning Engagement Manager and works under the direct guidance of the Media and Communications Manager to upgrade the existing photo and video assets of the Alaska SeaLife
Center (ASLC) digital library to align with best practices for storing and recalling material for use in education and media communications programs.
2. Supports media producers sourcing content related to production needs and ensures the best practices in file naming and metadata are accurately recorded for all assets.
3. Oversees the development of the library organization and cataloging of photographs and media assets in the ASLC Archive.
4. Develops a guidebook for managing the archives and best practices recommendations.
5. Maintains an effective working relationship with ASLC staff. Must be able to work both independently and as a team member, while handling multiple priorities in an efficient manner.
6. Works with other ASLC departments to source, code, and file assets to complete new or ongoing projects that fulfill the ASLC’s institutional and educational goals as needed.
7. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, and fellow staff members by promoting positive attitudes, good will, cooperation, and providing high standards of service.
8. Complies with all Alaska SeaLife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of standard and emerging archival and information science technologies.
  • Experience and understanding of Describing Archives: A Content Standards (DACS)
  • Demonstrated expertise with databases, content management systems, digital asset management systems, film/video elements, and digital formats.
  • Knowledge of how to apply metadata standards in archives.
  • Knowledge of best practices in digital conservation and preservation.
  • Knowledge of archive accessioning and research practices.
  • Experience using online databases for research purposes.
  • Knowledge of and fluency in the use of computers and other devices, the internet, email, social media, and cloud computing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with information management system
  • Experience with desktop design, Microsoft Publisher, and Canva
  • Experience with Photoshop

Ability to see and hear and remain in a stationary position during work hours while using repetitive
motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers. Requires ongoing interaction with people. More than 10% of the typical workday will necessitate communication with ASLC by Zoom or other online tools. The
remote job offers flexibility and availability in schedule, yet online supervision requires frequent checkins and communication to achieve work goals.
