ROLE TITLE: General Grounds Landscaper

POSITION REPORTS TO: Technology and Grounds Supervisor

Summary of Position

Under the general supervision of the Technology and Grounds Supervisor, the General Grounds / Landscaper will be required to perform duties independently according to the broadly prescribed landscaping master plan for Allegheny College’s 74 facilities and 565 acre campuses. These tasks will include grounds, trucking, composting, set ups, moving and related tasks. Self identifies work tasks, projects and needed repairs. Completes work order requests and updates completed work orders daily. Conducts Snow and Ice Removal Operations. Maintains first aid qualifications, work center safety, hazardous material handling, disposal and proper equipment wear. Performs critical on-call, after-duty standby responsibilities; responds to routine/urgent/emergency service calls. Works as part of the Maintenance Department’s team may assist the other Physical Plant teams (Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC/R, Locksmith, Painting, and Plumbing) on projects.

What you will do in this role:

  • Performs composting, set-ups, moving and delivery tasks, snow and ice removal operations, and routine care and maintenance on all grounds, cultivated areas, and trees. Collects, delivers, and cleans compost bins and conducts composting operations to include equipment operation and coordination. Performs set-ups to support campus activities to include athletic, admission, conference and event and student life activities. Provides moving, delivery, and logistical support for campus needs of college owned assets. Performs mowing, aerating, rolling, trimming, pruning, weeding, mulching, seeding, planting and, as necessary, herbicide and pesticide applications. Manages fertilization, irrigation, identification and treatment of improved areas. Erect and relocate athletic equipment, fences, posts, traffic, parking, and directory signs. Paint traffic and athletic field lines. Operate machinery and tools that are required to perform duties (i.e. Skid steer, Mini-Excavator, Tractors, Plow Truck, Trimmers, Chainsaws, etc.). Assist pavement installation and repairs; mix, pour, and finish concrete for patchwork and minor masonry repairs to curbs, walks, catch basins, etc.; lay asphalt material for patching roadways, walks, parking areas, etc. Perform vehicle and equipment checks; adjust, clean, oil, grease, inspect tire pressure, water, and anti-freeze levels; assist maintenance mechanic as directed. Remove brush, leaves, grass clippings, paper, spoil, and rubbish from walks, roads, curbs, parking lots, lawns, and other college property. Remove paint and other materials defacing college property. Remove snow and ice from walks, roads, and parking lots; apply anti-skid materials. Provides responsible and reliable coverage; shift work and overtime/weekend work will be required and must occasionally be available for off-hour emergencies
  • Maintain Accurate Record of Performed and Identified Preventative Maintenance and Repair Activities. Provides timely response to work orders and assignments independently. Performs daily “walk-throughs” to survey preventative maintenance and repair needs. Observe and report, through the work order system, any defects, deterioration, and wear and tear on the facilities and equipment. Effectively completes required administrative processes on request and effectively produces required documentation and reports
  • Provide Customer Service and Response. Manage and resolve customer inquiries and complaints. Escalate complex questions and complaints to Supervisor. Coordinate and communicate all work in occupied spaces. Notify customers of outage and estimated repair times.
  • Conduct General Maintenance Department Operations. Coordinate, communicate with, and assist in the work of subcontractors and vendors. Assist as required and cooperate with all tradespeople and custodians in the performance of day-to-day duties and responsibilities. Participate in snow and ice control operations by operating assigned equipment. Perform reasonable pest control tasks as directed. Implement initiatives aimed at improving communication and efficiency in operation. Document and educate others in the department to ensure seamless coverage. Responsible for effective implementation of work-study students as assigned. Assists with special projects periodically as directed. Organize and maintain compliance in storage and mechanical rooms as directed.
  • Ensures Safety Policies and Procedures are followed and met. Participates in all required and suggested safety training. Takes appropriate action to ensure safety of themselves and others in all situations. Must adhere to all applicable safety practices and standards. Identifies and reports any items that are in need of repair and/or pose a safety hazard at both interior and exterior of buildings to supervisor, forwarding to Physical Plant office issues that need immediate attention. Ensures that all work performed complies with any applicable code and safety requirements

YOUR COMPENSATION

New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

The expected minimum starting point for this position is $15.80 per hour.
