SummaryThe Apprentice Certified Medical Assistant will start in the role of Patient Advocate. The Patient Advocate coordinates patient’s resource needs with appropriate staff as well as community resources. The Patient Advocate is responsible for collecting accurate information including demographic, insurance, and financial information. Tasks include but are not limited to checking in patients, determining financial eligibility for the Sliding Fee Discount Program and other programs, scheduling appointments, planning for resources, checking out patients, accepting payments, and answering incoming calls.
A clearly defined progressive course of education and learning will move the apprentice into the role of Medical Assistant (MA) during the apprenticeship. See the Apprentice schedule for timing and competency schedules.
The Medical Assistant (MA) performs routine administrative and clinical tasks to assist in the delivering primary health care to Alluvion Health patients. The Medical Assistant performs clinical support staff procedures along with providing preventive health care education to patients of Alluvion Health, including working with patients of all socioeconomic backgrounds in an effective, culturally, and linguistically sensitive manner. Additionally, Medical Assistants will be responsible for making referrals to community services, providing program outreach, and performing other duties as assigned.
At the end of the 2000 hours of work and training the MA Apprentice will be qualified to attain the credential of Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) via the nationally recognized certification exam.

Essential Job ResponsibilitiesPatient Advocate
  • Creates and maintains respectful rapport with patients;
  • Provides excellent customer service;
  • Schedules all appointments for health center;
  • Answers incoming calls and retrieves phone messages, responding in a timely fashion according to health center policy and procedures;
  • Collects and verifies patient demographic and financial information according to program requirements;
  • Utilizes the electronic medical record system on a daily basis;
  • Makes appropriate referrals to Care Coordinators for resource assistance;
  • Determines financial eligibility for the Sliding Fee Discount Program according to program policies and guidelines;
  • Collects patient nominal fees, co-pays, and/or payments for services;
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information according to HIPAA;
  • Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors;
  • Participates in quality improvement programs and activities;
  • Performs duties efficiently and effectively;
  • Follows Alluvion Health’s policies and procedures;
  • Responsible for general clerical duties of the clinic;
  • Responsible for completing various special projects/events, which may require reviewing and analyzing information, identifying problems, recommending solutions, and writing reports;
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned; which may include but are not limited to directing or participating in special projects and events, conducting research, representing Alluvion Health at meetings and conferences, and attending continuing education and training events.
(Certified) Medical Assistant
  • Creates and maintains respectful rapport with participants and co-workers;
  • Provides excellent customer service;
  • Provide direct patient care in a clinical setting;
  • Answers incoming calls and retrieves phone messages, responding in a timely fashion;
  • Documents demographic and clinical information within the electronic medical record system;
  • Gathers height, weight, and other vitals;
  • Must carefully follow appropriate, and established, medical assistant protocols;
  • Assists with daily setting up and cleaning of exam rooms;
  • Assists in ordering, stocking clinic supplies and educational materials;
  • Completes all required documentation and establishes or updates client information in the electronic medical record;
  • Assists and supports families in locating community resources;
  • Assists with program outreach;
  • Maintains confidentiality according to HIPAA;
  • Works as a team player with staff, patients, and other community organizations to ensure quality services and program requirements are met to carry out the goals and objectives of Alluvion Health;
  • Performs duties efficiently and effectively;
  • Follows Alluvion Health’s policies and procedures;
  • Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, and the public;
  • Maintains required agency/program immunizations;
  • Responsible for completing various special projects/events, which may require reviewing and analyzing information, identifying problems, recommending solutions, and writing reports;
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned; which may include but are not limited to directing or participating in special projects and events, conducting research, representing Alluvion Health at meetings and conferences, and attending continuing education and training events.

Education/Training/QualificationsEducation/Training:
