Teacher Consultant

Department : Special Education

Reports to : Special Education Supervisor

Summary :

The Teacher Consultant serves as a member of Multidisciplinary Evaluation Teams to assist in the evaluation of the educational needs of persons suspected of being handicapped as well as providing necessary consultation and instructional services.

Duties and Responsibilities :

The Teacher Consultant shall have duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to the following :

• Collaborate with other staff in planning pre-referral strategies including consultation with parents, educational personnel and pertinent outside agencies.
• Evaluate students as part of a diagnostic team as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
• Effectively interpret results of evaluation to parents, students, and educational personnel both in writing and verbally.
• Participate in Individual Educational Planning Committee meetings.
• Provide counseling and direct instructional services to special education students as specified by the Individualized Educational Plans as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
• Continue Professional Development.
• Organize and manage assigned caseloads in order to meet legal mandates and time lines.
• Provide inservice training and / or workshops as requested
• Presence on the job is an employee’s fundamental obligation. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is required.
• Remain free of any alcohol or non prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace through their employment in the district.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the Teacher Consultant must be able to do the following :

• May be required to grasp, push, reach, or stoop / kneel / crouch.
• Acute vision required or correction including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• May occasionally be required to lift up to 20 pounds, rarely up to 50 pounds
• Ability to drive vehicle to and from local district
• Must be able to have repetitive wrist / hand / finger movements to work on computer and / or related office

Qualifications :

• Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate.
• Must possess a Master’s Degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
• Experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred
• Must possess approval as a teacher consultant from the Michigan Department of Education.
• Must show evidence of a minimum of three years of satisfactory teaching experience, not less than two years of which shall be in teaching handicapped persons in a special education classroom.
• Must demonstrate an ability to effectively communicate, in both written and verbal forms.
• Must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with other professionals as a team.
• Must be knowledgeable about special education laws.
• Must possess the ability to write and carry out individual educational plans.
• Must have a commitment to continuing Professional Development
• Must be skillful in the assessment of behaviors related to education.
• Must have the ability to pass a criminal history check.
• Must have own transportation to and from assignments.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.

Salary Range : The salary will be commensurate with education and demonstrated experience of the successful candidate to fulfill the requirements of the position as determined by administration.
