Position Summary

The ITS/Signals Inspector will be responsible for ensuring contractors' compliance by observing construction and documenting contractor's compliance with design plans, specifications, and other contract documents.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities.

  • Work independently to perform inspections of contractor installation of ITS and signal devices and associated infrastructure.
  • May be asked to plan, coordinate, and oversee materials testing activities of associated work.
  • Monitor contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance of moderate to complex construction projects.
  • Apply knowledge and experience using VDOT standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Apply engineering principles in the inspection and documentation of construction activities.
  • May oversee, direct, and review the work of Inspectors and Inspector Trainees
  • Maintain comprehensive project records and documentation using the VDOT Materials Book & project management software which could include VDOT Site Manager.
  • Apply Best Management Practices to safety activities.

Required Skills / Abilities

  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able and willing to workday and night shifts.
  • Able to pass a criminal background check.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years' experience in roadway or bridge construction inspection
  • Experience operating computer equipment, software programs including Microsoft Office Suite, and field-testing equipment.

Certifications / Licenses

  • Must have the ability to obtain the following certifications:
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Field Tech I
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Inspector
  • ACI Concrete
  • Intermediate Workzone
  • VA DEQ E&S Inspector
  • VDOT Soils & Aggregate
  • GRIT
  • VDOT Pavement Markings

Physical Requirements

The incumbent in this position can typically expect to sit and use his/her hands to handle and feel for more than 1/3 of the day. He/she can expect to stand or walk for more than 2/3 of the day. Talking and listening are also expected for more than 1/3 of the day. The ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or reach with arms will be needed for more than 1/3 of the day.

This position requires that the incumbent be able to lift items up to 80 pounds on an infrequent basis.

The incumbent in this position should have clear vision at 20 inches or less. He/she should be able to view various reports and forms as well as information displayed on a computer monitor and have the ability to distinguish between different colors. Depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to focus, and the ability to see from a distance are also necessary.
