Job Summary:

The Workforce Development Coordinator supports AFGs mission, helping to more effectively assist women already engaged with AFG programming in developing pathways for independent employment and a life-sustaining earned income for them and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Connect AFG participants with employment training, skill development, job placement, vocational and career opportunities, including providing support to maintain their employment long-term.
  • Provide education, coaching and guidance to participants to overcome physical, economic, social and emotional barriers to achieve their personal and vocational goals.
  • Work with the WFDCC team to develop and implement a mentoring program that can directly support AFG's participants as they adjust to their first employment experiences.
  • Engage with internal staff and external workforce development providers in and around metro Detroit and, especially, the city of Detroit, to learn and disseminate information to engage and assist AFG participants.
  • Work with the WFDCC manager and staff to create a system with relevant employers that can provide viable workforce development pathways and potential employment opportunities (e.g., skilled trades, manufacturing, large employers, local social enterprises and businesses, technology industry, etc.), including any of the following:
    • Support opportunities to obtain certifications (e.g., Women Who Weld, ISAIC, Henry Ford Community College, etc.).
    • Strengthening connections with Michigan Works, DESC and similar entities.
    • Develop and manage potential job shadow, intern and/or apprenticeship program(s) with employment partners who engage with AFG participants.
    • Eats All Good (EAG) and other potential employment partners, to improve the capabilities to serve (employ and educate) girl and women participants of AFG. This could include developing a model for a successful AFG partnership with EAG that could be proposed to other prospective metro Detroit employers.
    • Sew Great Detroit (SGD), an internal enterprise of AFG. This could include creating and developing additional processes for recruitment, training, and paying wages, as well as providing operational support for SGD.
  • Research, evaluate and propose partnerships with strong workforce development projects already in place in the Detroit area.
  • Identify, document and share best practices and recommend ongoing/new training in alignment with AFG participants ongoing needs.
  • Coordinate with other AFG departments in support of the work (i.e., marketing, human resources, fund development).
  • In addition to the core responsibilities of the position, may be asked, or may seek, to engage unique abilities, strengths and passions through participation on cross-functional teams.

Demonstrated Abilities:
Possess an understanding of and passion for the AFG mission.
Possess effective organizational/project management skills with attention to detail.
Possess solid training, coordination, time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
Demonstrate excellent communication skills with an ability to express self effectively, both orally and in written form.
Ability to exhibit discretion, patience, tact and courtesy in working with staff and participants in the AFG.
Ability to provide coaching that is tailored to meet an individuals learning needs.
Ability to develop technical and/or professional educational content, including trainer guides, worksheets, handouts, and assessments/evaluations.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, as needed.
Acquired Knowledge:
Bachelors Degree (or equivalent work experience) in non-profit, social work or a related field.
2 years of relevant work experience required.
Preferred: Demonstrable experience related to one or more of the following: workforce development, employment training, job placement, vocational training or career development.
This position requires regular driving. Incumbents must have reliable transportation, must possess a drivers license and automobile insurance, and must have a good driving record.
