Amazon Performance Advertising sits at the intersection of e-commerce and advertising, developing advertising experiences that are a critical focus for Amazon. We are seeking an exceptional Scientist to provide thought leadership across our teams and drive innovation for our global business. Science sits at the heart of our advertising business: selecting and rendering delightful experiences for our shoppers and viewers, helping our advertisers create campaigns that grow their business, optimizing our ad serving process and measuring the effect of advertising on long-term shopper behaviour and business health.
To be successful in this role you will need to be comfortable defining a long-term technical and scientific vision for our ad product from our customers backwards, and have the ability to translate that vision into a sequence of incremental steps that our teams will pursue with your guidance. This is a role that combines leadership, organizational scale, technical ability, product focus and business understanding. Your clear thinking, innovation and leadership will help our organization create new kinds of advertising products, and optimize their workings for shoppers, viewers and advertisers.
Key job responsibilities
The Senior Principal Scientist role leads across all these areas, inventing new shopper and advertiser experiences, accelerating the pace of Machine Learning, and raising the bar on science and experimentation. You will be an industry-leading expert in at least one of: Machine Learning, Statistics, Operations Research, Causal Inference and Optimization. Furthermore, you will have broad exposure to the breadth of modern Computer Science and Machine Learning, able to work across disciplines and drive clarity and collaboration with technical and business leaders across the company. You will be an exceptional communicator, able to earn the trust of technical peers and builders and executive leaders. You will have experience hiring and growing more junior scientists and engineers, and a track record of bringing clarity to ambiguous domains and delivering outsized results for customers.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* MA/MSc in Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research or a related field.
* 10 years of experience driving end-to-end products at scale, delivering results, leading high performance science and engineering teams
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.
* Experience with machine learning, statistics, economics, auction theory, mechanism design or game theory.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, Economics or related disciplines
* Experience in performance advertising.
* Experience building and operating ML systems in production, including high performance Deep Learning training & inference
* History of publication in top-tier conferences, or equivalent innovation in a commercial setting

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $240,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $350,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
