American Association for Cancer Research is Hiring a Science Writer Near Philadelphia, PA

Overview:

The Science Writer in the Communications and Public Relations Department is responsible for translating scientific data and information related to cancer research into content that helps educate the public, media, policymakers, and the health care industry; the writer helps educate the stakeholders about AACRs mission and the importance of biomedical research and funding. In this capacity, the writer assists in implementing AACRs communications and public relations plans that facilitate the accurate communication and reporting of the latest advances in cancer research from AACRs conferences, peer-reviewed journals, partnerships, and other scientific activities.

Responsibilities:

The Science Writer will write and edit copy that helps promote awareness of AACRs scientific, policy, and fundraising activities. Responsibilities include:

  • Writing and editing scientific press releases, blog posts, and features about cancer research advances from the AACRs conferences and journal articles.
  • Developing scientific content for the website and social media platforms.
  • Staying abreast of the latest developments in various areas of cancer research, including basic and translational research, population research, and preclinical and clinical research.
  • Researching and gathering information on scientific topics of interest and participating in the journal club.
  • Occasionally traveling to AACR conferences and other scientific programs to cover important scientific advances on the blog as required.
  • Collaborating with science writers and media relations staff to help identify important cancer research advances from AACRs journals, scientific conferences, programs, and other initiatives, to communicate to the scientific/medical press, national press, policymakers, cancer research community, and the public.
  • Assisting in writing the AACR Annual Report and Annual Meeting scripts.
  • Collaborating with other members of the AACR about science communications projects that support the AACRs mission and goals.
Qualifications:
  • PhD in biomedical science; cancer research experience preferred.
  • Experience in science writing and editing.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to write and edit compelling science/medical content for scientific and lay audiences, including press releases, blog posts, and other public-facing articles.
  • Possesses outstanding editorial skills and knowledge of AP and other style guides.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including being capable of working across departments.
  • Thorough understanding of biomedical terminology.
  • Experience in dealing with high-profile cancer researchers.
  • Experience in social media.
  • Experience in media and public relations preferred.
