AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE is Hiring a Legal Assistant, Immigrant Rights Program Near Newark, NJ

Status: Full - Time, Exempt, Specific Term (through August 2025 with possible renewal upon receipt of funding)

SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Legal Assistant will be part of a team providing immigration legal services to low- income immigrants in New Jersey, including survivors of domestic violence and other crimes. The Legal Assistant is responsible for conducting intakes with clients; maintaining a client caseload; preparing forms, applications, and letters to be submitted to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), under the direction of the Supervising Accredited Representative; and following up with cases. They will also participate in community trainings and educational meetings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES: The key responsibilities of the Legal Assistant will include the following:

  • Meet with community members to determine eligibility for immigration status. Counsel clients regarding documentation needed to submit applications.
  • Under supervision of the Supervising Accredited Representative, prepare applications and supporting documentation for submission to USCIS.
  • Manage caseload and maintain client files in good order, including photocopying applications, letters, supporting documentation, and USCIS follow up.
  • Translate documents from Spanish to English. Secure translations in other languages as necessary.
  • Participate in community presentations to inform immigrants of their rights.
  • Provide trainings to social service providers and other professionals on the special needs of noncitizens, particularly survivors of domestic violence and other crimes.
  • Collaborate with organizing and advocacy staff to connect project clients to organizing work.
  • Participate in AFSC staff meetings and case reviews.
  • Attend immigration law training sessions and conferences.
  • Work with AFSCʼs Social Worker to meet clientsʼ social service needs.
  • Assist with the preparation of quarterly narrative and statistical reports regarding case consultation and case representation. Assist in the preparation of reports to funders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent education training.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum one year experience with immigration law and procedures preferred, particularly applications under the Violence Against Women Act, U visas and battered spouse waivers.
  • Fluency in written and oral English and Spanish.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including public speaking.
  • Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and manage a substantial workload.
  • Familiarity with software applications case management systems, and cloud-based programs in a Windows environment, including Microsoft Office and Docketwise.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, the public and funders.
  • Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.

COMPENSATION: Salary Range 14 - $52,929 - $71,452 - Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
