Elementary PE Teacher Job Description

Job Summary:

An APA Elementary PE Teacher will have a strong background in physical education, a genuine enthusiasm for working with young children, and the ability to create engaging and developmentally appropriate lesson plans. The Elementary PE Teacher will be responsible for instructing students in various physical activities, promoting health and wellness, and fostering a positive and supportive learning environment. The Elementary PE Teacher at American Preparatory Academy reports to the School Academic Director (Elementary) and is responsible for the instruction and assessment of a class of students and for coordinating and conducting all activities in relation to student learning and accomplishing the mission of American Prep.

The Elementary PE Teacher responsibilities and requirements include:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive physical education curriculum for elementary students, aligned with state standards and educational objectives.
  • Plan and conduct age-appropriate activities, games, and exercises that promote physical fitness, coordination, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Teach fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, and catching, while emphasizing proper technique and safety.
  • Assess students' physical abilities and progress, and provide constructive feedback to support their growth and development.
  • Incorporate health education into lessons, covering topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and the benefits of regular exercise.
  • Commits to delivering the APA curriculum to all students equitably.
  • Adheres to the APA Staff Manual.
  • Follows the 180-day plan for their grade level or subject level, and updates the plan annually to allow for data-driven improvements.
  • Communicates knowledge to students in an interesting, stimulating, and effective manner.
  • Assesses student achievement and develops plans to ensure student progress based on assessment data.
  • Develops and maintains a stimulating and nurturing environment that meets student's individual and the class needs.
  • Works with team partners or others as appropriate to develop curriculum that aligns with the APA standards and the school's charter.
  • Uses Direct Instruction approaches where required or recommended
  • Implements the CHAMPs program.
  • Supports standards-based instructional approaches that ensure the continuous progress of students desiring more challenge, including but not limited to high-ability and high-performance learners.
  • Participates in team meetings and offers professional guidance and input
  • Engages in professional communication that meets APA’s communication policy.
  • Utilizes data gathering and submits required reports in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Trivium and provides instruction appropriate to the phase of learning students are in. Implements curriculum and instruction in a manner consistent with this understanding.
  • Shows empathy for and understanding of students.
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments.
  • Develops with parents and students a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and objectivity. Facilitates resolution of problems that may arise with students and parents.
  • Holds parent/student/teacher conferences as outlined in the staff manual.
  • Works effectively with parent volunteers.

Professional Development:

  • Models and promotes positive interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills as outlined in APA’s communication policy.
  • Assumes responsibility for his/her professional growth which may include but not be limited to conferences, meetings, observation and in-service training driven by student needs and school objectives.
  • Works as a team member, sharing common planning, professional development, curriculum design, educational experience and training.

Leadership

  • Acts as a role model and resource for students and other staff members
  • Demonstrates and encourage creativity and excellence
  • Is willing to assume responsibilities outside of the classroom in order to achieve the needs of a small but growing school with limited resources
  • Performs other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the Director

Experience and Skills:

Successful candidates will be:

  • Energetic, enthusiastic and committed to student success
  • Able to work well in a teamwork environment, including participation in a coaching model for teaching
  • Utah Elementary licensure or ARL or APT or Bachelor's Degree

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Valid teaching certification/license in Physical Education (elementary level).
  • Previous experience working with elementary-aged children in a physical education setting.
  • Strong knowledge of child development principles and pedagogical strategies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate young learners.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting health, wellness, and physical activity in children.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
  • Ability to pass a background check.

Working Conditions:

The Elementary Physical Education Teacher will primarily work in a school gymnasium or outdoor recreational area, with regular interaction with students, colleagues, and parents. The position may require some lifting of equipment and occasional participation in physical activities alongside students. The teacher will typically work regular school hours during the academic year, with additional responsibilities such as planning and professional development as needed.
