The American School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants, youth, and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become educated and self-directed life-long learners.
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education, evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools. There is also much to do in West Hartford. There is a wide array of parks and recreation. There are pools and hiking trails. There are historic sites to visit as well. If shopping is on the list, then Blue Back Square, located in the center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to satisfy everyone.
SCOPE OF DUTIES
Summary:
The Human Resources Generalist role is a diverse one that will support the current HR team in the following areas: recruiting, onboarding, training, benefits open enrollment, employee engagement, etc., along with the logistics involved in these areas. This position manages full life cycle recruiting for assigned openings; supports the Onboarding and Training programming logistics; supports Benefits Administration and Open Enrollment periods; supports Employee Engagement Programming; and all other Human Resources directed responsibilities. Finally, the HR Generalist will have a strong focus on recruiting and the completion of appropriate due diligence for same.
Position reports to the Human Resources Manager.
Primary Duties
  • Full life cycle recruiting for non-exempt single and multi-incumbent positions, managing logistics and completion of due diligence for these roles.
  • Conducts background checks, credential checks and employee eligibility verifications. Manages due diligence for these hires including in-state and out-of-state child protective services checks, reference checking, etc.
  • In collaboration with the HR team, manages the internal transfer list; collaborates with Student Life and CORE team leadership to facilitate a smooth transfer is completed.
  • Posts ASD open positions to specific external websites as instructed.
  • Manages the interview process for internal and external applicants for assigned openings; participates in the interview process as required and makes recommendations regarding qualified applicants.
  • Assists with facilitation of the onboarding process for employees; assists Onboarding and Training Coordinator with logistics of onboarding and training programs. Reviews, tracks, and documents compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments.
  • In collaboration with the HR team, assists in planning and implementing employee recognition and engagement programming.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Provides HR customer service support to internal and external customers.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding organization’s policies, procedures, and benefits.
  • Ensures proper approvals and process new hire, status change, and termination paperwork in timely fashion.
  • Helps to monitor the organization's culture so that it supports the attainment of the company's goals and promotes employee satisfaction.
  • Assists/participates in company-wide committees as requested by HR Manager to include wellness, training, environmental health and safety, activity, and culture and communications.
  • Organizes and maintains personnel records to ensure compliance; performs filing in a timely manner.
  • Responds to requests for Employment Verifications received by the Department.
  • Helps to plan, organize, and participate in company events.
  • Collaborates with team members and assists in general areas of HR as needed.
  • Assists managers with employee relations and performance management including performance evaluations and progressive discipline.
  • Interprets and applies union contract language as needed.
  • Ensure employment compliance within all areas of responsibility adhering to applicable laws, policies, collective bargaining agreements, and ASD policy and procedure.
  • Identify engagement and retention opportunities and bring possible solutions to HR team for evaluation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Team oriented outlook; willingness to be “all-in” with a hard-working, friendly and awesome HR team.
  • High degree of integrity and evidence of practicing high level of confidentiality.
  • Critical thinking, sound judgment and the ability to appropriately manage confidential and sensitive information.
  • Working knowledge of HR disciplines – recruiting, benefits administration, new hire compliance, orientation, training, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft environment; Google Docs experience very helpful; ADP experience highly desired.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in Human Resources.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or HR Certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with a Union environment helpful but not required.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language highly desired; interest in learning ASL required.

  • Compensation range is based on experience and available upon request

  • $1000 sign on bonus after one year of service
