American Society for Microbiology is Hiring a Chief Information Officer (Hybrid) Near Washington, DC

Job Overview

The Chief Information Officer is part of the senior management team and provides vision and leadership in the development and implementation of ASM’s information technology. The position is responsible for enterprise-wide IT operations as well as planning and implementing information systems to support the business. The Chief Information Officer is required to collaborates and partner with ASM’s leadership team on strategic opportunities to advance the mission of the Society. This position develops and implements long- and short-term strategies for information technology investment and use.

Essential Functions (defines the critical end results expected of the jobholder related to the accountabilities above)

  1. Create and maintain an Information Management Roadmap to ensure information technology investments can be structured and planned to meet business goals, create opportunities, and manage technology investments over time.
  2. Develop, mentor and coach IT staff and others in the organization to create a sustainable team culture, which values self-improvement, instilled customer focus and meets performance goals.
  3. Collaborate with the ASM senior leadership team and volunteer board of directors to identify and execute on strategic opportunities to advance the mission of the Society to ensure available information technology tools are used and applied efficiently and effective to maximize the performance of all business units at ASM.
  4. Establish structured goals, customer communication best practices, cost controls and project management standards to enhance implementation processes and the effectiveness of large-scale projects to increase the success of technology related projects.
  5. Responsiveness to the CEO and to the organizational needs.
  6. Expand and improve the availability, transparency, and accuracy of ASM data and analytical capacities to improve the effectiveness of operations across the organization and staff insights into performance.
  7. Manage all operations of Information Technology department including staffing, project planning and a multi- million-dollar annual budget to ensure the IT team can provide basic business productivity services, implement, and support major business systems, and support the information technology needs of all business units.
  8. This position description should not be construed to contain every function/responsibility that may be required to be performed by an incumbent in this job. Incumbents are required to perform other functions as assigned.

  7. Enterprise Processes and Technologies – Understands and effectively uses standard office equipment such as personal computers/laptops, and office automation software. Uses new, specialized or the organization-specific equipment, technologies, software, databases, and systems, as required, in accordance with the organization policies. Up to date on social media and uses it appropriately on behalf of ASM.
  8. Business Expertise, Policies, and Budget Allocation – Demonstrates an understanding of own functional area, the business of the Department and the ASM’s needs and priorities. Understands and applies knowledge of ASM strategies, business priorities and policies to accomplish goals and execute on business area work programs. Manages budgets, workforce planning and risk management.

Management Responsibility

  • Responsible for all decisions related to the management of the Department regarding personnel actions, acquisitions and utilization of resources, procedures, and control systems.
  • All facets of this position are self-directed within the policies and procedures approved by the Board of Directors and broad guidelines established by the CEO. 
  • This position is responsible to the CEO for the organization’s fiscal management and in this capacity rules on the allocation of expenditures.
  • This position is responsible for the development of budgets for all existing programs and new proposals, gives signatory approval for expenditures, contracts, subcontracts, and personal service agreements and is the final signature on checks. 

Physical Demands
This is largely a sedentary role and may sit or use PC for long periods of time. Bending, reaching, or stooping may be necessary for use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates in a professional office environment and remote. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Salary Range- $204,491 - $270,934
