American Student Assistance is Hiring a Segall Innovation Fellowship Near Boston, MA

Overview Of The Segall Innovation FellowshipAmerican Student Assistance® (ASA) seeks graduate students, Ph.D. candidates, or recent post-doctoral scholars to join us in advancing research that helps students know themselves, know their options, and make informed decisions about their education and career goals early in life through participating in the Peter Segall Innovation Fellowship.
Segall Innovation Fellows are current graduate students or postdoctoral scholars in education, public policy, social science, media and communications, and related fields. Fellows will collaborate with ASA’s experienced staff on scholarly projects that advance both their own research work and help ASA build a generation of successful students who are confident, competent, and ready to realize the future they envision.
SkillsThe Fellowship is an opportunity to develop substantive skills and business acumen while making progress on the Fellow’s area of scholarly focus. Fellows will have the ability to collaborate with ASA on a project that is aligned with ASA’s mission and draws on the Fellow’s unique background. Examples of projects of interest to ASA include:
    • creating K-12 student innovation spaces;
    • tackling complex educational technology challenges;
    • examining education sustainability questions, or
    • exploring kids’ relationship with digital media
However, ASA is open to a wide range of other educational research that aligns with our mission of helping students imagine and prepare for their life after high school.
Work EnvironmentThe ASA workplace is a hybrid environment with an expectation for being onsite at the Boston office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
To Be ConsideredProspective Fellows should submit a proposal consisting of their resume or CV and a detailed cover letter. The cover letter should address reasons for pursuing the Fellowship, a brief description of a scholarly project that would be carried out that is related to ASA’s mission, and how this project could bring innovation to ASA. Proposals for the 2024-2025 academic year will be accepted through April 30, 2024. Compensation will be provided and commensurate with the duration and scope of the research.
ASA BackgroundFor over 60 years, American Student Assistance® (ASA) has focused on helping students pursue a college degree. In fact, we pioneered an entire student access program and partnered with hundreds of colleges and universities to help students and alumni manage their student loans and maintain financial wellness. We’ve learned a great deal over these six decades about when students need the most help as they think through their educations and career paths. Today, our work begins with students as young as middle school, providing them tools and resources so they can make informed choices about their futures. We are three years into our “direct-to-kid” digital first approach to engaging students along their career and secondary education journey, and we are excited to expand our informal learning models to more students in new and innovative ways in the coming years.
