SummaryJob Description:The University Chaplain & Director, Kay Spiritual Life Center provides leadership and counsel to the university community to facilitate the university’s commitment to spiritual growth, ethical behavior, values, and community service.
The University Chaplain & Director, Kay Spiritual Life Center (KSLC) plays a pivotal role in advancing the University's mission of inclusivity and acceptance. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Success, the Director oversees all aspects of KSLC's operations, ensuring that religious communities contribute positively to campus life. This includes developing and leading interfaith programming, providing guidance to religiously affiliated groups, and administering the center's budget. The Director also offers counsel to students, faculty, and staff, promoting inclusive religious and spiritual initiatives. With a deep understanding of religious spirituality and mindfulness, the Director collaborates with diverse stakeholders within AU and the local community. Additionally, the Director supervises staff, manages the departmental budget, and serves on university-wide committees to support Student Affairs initiatives.

  • Provides direction, perspective, and relationship to the United Methodist founding of the university and general spiritual leadership and inter-belief perspective for the American University community. Provides leadership and participates in services of worship, religious observances and traditions, weddings, memorials, and ceremonial and ritual events in the life of the university. Provides pastoral counseling and crisis intervention. Provides direction and management of Christian, and interfaith spiritual leadership for the American University community, including developing opportunities for spiritual growth in a manner that supports and celebrates the diversity characteristic of the university.
  • Directs a regular series of signature programs and initiatives that facilitate interfaith understanding and universal concerns for the environment, economic justice, and human rights. Initiates, provides leadership, and collaborates with other departments, faculty, and recognized student organizations to assist and identify KSLC as a venue for moral discussions about justice issues confronting the university, the nation, and the world. Foster a sense of belonging and enrich the religious and spiritual journey of students by supporting their exploration of personal beliefs and values across various faith traditions. Facilitate interfaith discussions, service projects, and educational activities. Act as leader to address the religious and spiritual requirements of marginalized student communities.
  • Offer guidance and oversee the daily functions of the Kay Spiritual Life Center Foster collaboration with various campus departments to ensure seamless integration of the office's activities with the broader campus community. Promote the office's programs and services, serving as a valuable resource to enhance awareness and appreciation of the diverse interests supported by the department. Encourage students to explore their personal beliefs and perspectives, nurturing their spiritual growth and understanding of themselves and the world around them. Recruits contributing affiliated community partners and collaborates regularly with them and with Student Affairs staff and other members of the university community to create, foster, and coordinate opportunities for spiritual awareness and growth. Liaises with the Interfaith Club promoting their programs and serves as their advisor. Coordinates the scholarship and cohort gatherings for children/dependents of United Methodist clergy.
  • Supervises the Associate Director and assist with daily management including the Center’s operating budget, rights, and responsibilities of contributed chaplains, and review of religious accommodation requests. Create and execute communication strategies and structures to enhance the visibility of programs offered by the KSLC. Craft and produce promotional materials for religious and spiritual events and services. Oversee the design and upkeep of the Center’s web pages and publications to ensure they are accurate and engaging. Develop a robust connection between National UMC and the American University, including co-sponsored speakers and events, partnered volunteer opportunities, philanthropic and resource support of emerging university needs, and facility sharing. In conjunction with the AVP for Student Engagement and Success, administer the KSLC budget, the Poynter Fund, the KSLC Restricted Fund, and United Methodist Minister Scholarship fund.
  • Consults with the Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement and Success, and relevant university leadership on the spiritual and ethical issues and belief community needs within the university. Works with the academic and administrative units and student groups on social action opportunities and responsibilities. Identify avenues for involvement in religious, spiritual, and mindfulness practices, as well as the development of corresponding skills. Recognize any deficiencies in support for both faith-based and non-sectarian spiritual well-being and take steps to address these gaps. Enhance students' and the institution's capacity to understand concepts related to meaning, purpose, and inner balance. Serve on university committees as requested. Provide timely responses rooted in critical thinking, equity, and care to issues and crises. Prepare manuals, reports, proposals, and other documents to further Student Engagement goals and maintain institutional records.
  • Establish mechanisms to evaluate the impact of programs and services provided by religious communities. Offer guidance on available programs and services. Supervise Chapel facilities maintenance and collaborate with relevant offices and departments to enhance its aesthetics and functionality. Act as a liaison with Student Affairs for crisis management. Develop and enforce policies and procedures to ensure compliance with AU policies. Conduct educational workshops for all members of the campus community. Engage with student club and organization leaders, as well as other departments, to promote the programs and services offered by the Kay Spiritual Life Center.

Supervisory Responsibility
  • Supervises full-time, part-time staff, and student staff.
  • Provides oversight for several full-time contributing chaplains and staff.
  • Provides oversight for over 16 part-time contributing community partners.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work
  • Full time/35 hours week, some evenings, and weekends are required.
  • Position may include classroom teaching and capstone advising.
Salary
  • $85,136-$115,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
Required Education And Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience
  • Ordination as a deacon/elder in the United Methodist Church required with at least five years of experience in campus ministry or chaplaincy to include administrative, interfaith and program development responsibilities, and experience in facilitating moral and ethical inquiry.
  • Candidates should hold a master's degree in religion, theology, ministry, counseling, or a related field, along with a demonstrated capability to foster community cohesion among individuals from varied backgrounds.
  • They should have practical experience in organizing interfaith programming for college students and a strong commitment to promoting religious pluralism and embracing diverse faith and cultural perspectives.
  • Additionally, candidates must exhibit a dedication to student development, exceptional interpersonal and written communication abilities, financial acumen, and the capacity to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • They should also possess the skills to create an inclusive and welcoming environment, treat all individuals equitably while acknowledging cultural differences, and uphold accountability for behavior that supports a diverse and inclusive community.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience or interest in grant writing.
Preferred Education And Experience
  • PhD or equivalent.
  • Doctorate of the equivalent in experience and training is preferred.
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience.

  • Student Services Skills: Ability to serve as bridge to services, intervene and/or advocate on students’ behalf with offices across campus to support needs, drive engagement and empower students to achieve their goals.
  • Diagnostic Information Gathering: Ability to seek out relevant people to obtain information; probe skillfully to get at the facts when others are reluctant to disclose the full details; ask clarifying questions; and gain a complete and accurate picture by checking multiple sources.
  • Standard Office Software: Skill using email, word processing, spreadsheet/ data analysis and presentation development software applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint while preparing briefings, reports, and presentations.
