AmeriCorps is Hiring a RMYC Wildlife Intern Near Steamboat Springs, CO
Internships are designed to engage youth and young adults in valuable work experiences within natural resources management agencies and non-profits. Internships allow participants to consider or advance careers and education in natural resources. RMYC provides support to all internships while the intern works under the daily supervision of the hosting public lands management agency, or non-profit. Partners include the United States Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the Colorado Youth Corps Association, and a growing circle of agency and non-profit partners. Member Duties : Primary assignment mapping black-tailed prairie dog colonies on the National Grassland. This will involve camping out 4 days a week and operating a UTV. All staff will be trained on this, and any other equipment needed to perform projects. Camps will be at remote locations on National Forest land. Other assignments may involve surveying for raptors, mountain plover, swift fox, burrowing owls, and northern goshawk. Constructing or completing habitat project work such as watershed development, fencing, or clearing areas to establish food that is more desirable or cover habitat may also be involved. The incumbent may also help collect and accumulate data through a variety of techniques; examine information and develop reports of results with suitable recommendations. Assignments will require routinely navigating on public and private road systems without direct supervision. The use of a compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit will be required to locate off-road study sites.
