AmeriCorps is Hiring a Valencia SWCD VISTA Volunteer Program Builder Near Belen, NM
The Valencia SWCD serves the people of central New Mexico. District headquarters are located at a 97-acre Conservation Area, south of Albuquerque. VSWCD’s mission of natural resource conservation centers on being good stewards of the Earth. Since the 2022 New Mexico wildfires razed District conservation areas, VSWCD began long-term recovery in a manner that will alleviate poverty. The VISTA member will build capacity to increase community engagement & sustain District programs & services by developing & implementing a volunteer network trained in post-fire restoration, climate-resilient agriculture, & climate-disaster mitigation. The VISTA member will research climate-adapted vegetation for restoration & climate-resilient agricultural methods & write grant applications to support this work. The VISTA member will collaborate with District personnel & partners to achieve project goals. Volunteers will be deployed at the District’s community gardens & conservation areas. Volunteers will gain technical skills & experience for jobs in resilient & sustainable agriculture & in climate-disaster mitigation & restoration—which will lift participants out of generational poverty. The District needs someone with strong communication skills & familiarity with natural resources. Comfort with networking & interacting with the public is a must. Individuals with a background in environmental education, agriculture, biology, wildlife management, technical writing, or related fields are encouraged to apply. You'll learn about wildlife habitat, predicted climate futures for New Mexico, climate-adapted & soil and water-conserving agriculture, & how conservation & climate-disaster mitigation & restoration can be economic drivers for sustainable agriculture, community resiliency, outdoor recreation, & ecotourism. The District is building economic resiliency in the aftermath of devastating wildfire that razed 75% of District-owned and community-valued conservation lands. The VISTA member will research best practices, develop a recruitment plan, & incorporate sustainability methods for a volunteer network. The VISTA member will grow partnerships with community members & institutions, including 2 Pueblos, to increase their engagement with the volunteer network & provide a pipeline for recruitment. The VISTA member will research climate-adapted vegetation for restoration, climate-resilient agriculture, & climate-disaster mitigation & identify grants that will support this work. The VISTA member will write grant applications & build communication strategies to sustain engagement of volunteers, public & private institutions, and funders.
